Beauty Hacks Makeup Artists Rely On Every Day

Whether I'm creating a natural, no makeup-makeup look or full-fledged evening glam, how the face is prepped is key to a successful look. And while cutting corners can save time, there are a few commandments I always follow when applying makeup, and ones that happen before I even touch a brush to anyone's face! Read on to check out the rules of beauty I rely on every day (and dare not break).

1. Drink Plenty of H2O

I cannot stress this enough-drink plenty of water! That's me gently yelling at you. Hydrating your body means younger, smoother, glowy(er)-looking skin. To make sure you stay hydrated, keep a refillable water bottle with you all day and set 'drinking' goals for yourself, ultimately trying to reach eight, 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day.

2. Exfoliate Regularly

Sure, you likely (hopefully) cleanse and moisturize daily, but how often do you exfoliate? Exfoliating regularly sloughs away hard-to-shed dead skin cells, which can prevent moisturizer and serum from fully penetrating your skin. Ask a dermatologist how often you should exfoliate based on your skin type and needs, and follow this guide on how to exfoliate the right way.

I recommend using the YSL Top Secrets Natural Action Exfoliator, or the Kiehl's Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub for those with sensitive skin.

3. Count on Concealer

Concealer is a multi-functional tool when used to its full advantage. I love a thick concealer that can be 'sheered out' with a bit of moisturizer-so not only do you have the perfect zit disguiser, but also a product that can be added to say, an eye cream to conceal dark circles quickly without caking.

ProTip: Add a swipe of concealer to areas where you'll apply highlighter (brow bone, down the bridge of your nose, chin and forehead) so your illuminator has extra staying power.

4. Always Be Prepared-With Lipstick

My favorite lipstick hack is to keep a nude, red and a brightly-colored lip stain in your desk, purse, or vanity at any time. In a pinch, you can add to cheeks, blot on lips (for a barely there stain), or apply fully for a great nighttime option. Versatility is key!

5. Use Setting Spray

To ensure long-lasting makeup, always set your foundation. Whether it's for my own makeup or a client, I swear by the Urban Decay setting sprays.

I recommend the De-Slick Oil-Control option for those with oily skin, and for those with dry or combo skin. And for those extra long nights, I reach for All Nighter to prevent makeup meltdowns.

ProTip: Mist setting spray onto your makeup sponge and gently tap onto the T-zone for a more concentrated application.
