Elegant Provence Destination Wedding | Fly Away Bride

via

Katerina and Edward, from Russia and France, married in the beautiful Provence region of France from whence Edward hails. Katernia, a wedding planner herself, organised her day with her company So Special Events- and what an amazing job she did. The couple chose Provence for its easily predictable climate, magnificent scenery and fabulous food and wine. We adore Katerina's beautifully elegant dress, as well as the light in these images captured so well by Polina Shefter.

DESTINATION DECISION

"I fell in love with Provence as soon as I saw it through the window of the train Paris-Arles. It's the home region of Edward and when he proposed me, we immediately knew we would get married in Provence. Easily predictable climate, magnificent landscapes, beautiful nature and great food and wine- what else do you need for a perfect wedding? With my fiancé we decided that we didn't want a traditional wedding, but rather a three-day party where the closest friends and family members could enjoy the region. That's why we decided to rent a traditional Provencal villa (we call it a "mas" here) where we could stay for three days.

PLANNING

To be honest, Provence is not a region where providers are service-oriented, unless you have a very large budget for your event. They are often old school, don't have social network profiles, respond slowly to emails and are generally very "tranquille" (cool). It took me a while to find young professionals whose vision would correspond to mine. You can't imagine the time I have spent looking for a fleurist before I have found Faustine from Fleur Design by Faustine! I always wanted the wedding to reflect our personalities and it actually worked out really well. We had an elegant and sophisticated official celebration with a vow exchange ceremony officiated by our close friend, and a very cool Sunday after-party with barbecue, swimming pool and cold rosé.

DETAILS OF THE DAY

I chose pastel colours for decoration, like white, ivory, nude pink and peachy orange. Intense green and elegant gold added a little classy touch and made the ambiance more sophisticated. Some of decoration elements were offered by my fleurist, but as I am a huge décor fan, I have been shopping whole year long to find pieces that would compliment existent decoration. As we are a bilingual couple (my husband is French and I'm Russian), it was essential for us to have a multilingual ceremony. In order to make sure that everyone understood what was going on, I asked my friend to be a translator and to interprete our parents' speeches, as well as our vows. It worked out very well, besides having a special time dedicated only to speeches was a guarantee that no one is going to miss anything. It also allowed our bridesmaids, groomsmen, friends and family to enjoy the dinner without being worried about the upcoming speech (even if they love us, I can understand it's stressful to speak in front of 70 people some of whom you hardly know).

The last thing I would like to tell couples that are planning their wedding in Provence, is that it might easily get very, very hot in the afternoon. We were lucky and cautious at the same time. First of all, we planned the ceremony in the late afternoon (at about 6.30pm), in order to avoid the intense heat of a Provincial sun. We knew that we couldn't provide any shade, so we told all the guests to bring sunglasses, hats or fans, whatever that would make them feel more comfortable. We also served ice cold refreshments right before the ceremony. In addition to that, we were helped by mistral (strong and fresh wind typical in Provence) that made the air much fresher. It had its drawbacks however, because no decoration stayed in place. Luckily we had an experienced local catering manager who found a solution; otherwise it would have been a disaster!"
