The Offbeat Bride: Christie, Director of Marketing

Her offbeat partner: Jesse, Operations Manger

Date and location of wedding: Goodlake Restaurant, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - March 5, 2015

Our offbeat wedding at a glance:

We did a few things differently for the wedding. First, it was a total surprise Star Trek wedding for everyone and planned entirely by my best friend. It was Star Trek and LEGO-themed, including a Star Trek cake topper, Star Trek poster, LEGO chocolates, and a cake with pictures of our three cats, Holmes, Watson, Dexter.

We had dinner first, then the ceremony followed after. There were Tim Horton Timbits toast with double doubles (so Canadian). We also had chocolate tins with truffles at each place setting that were done by Jesse's uncle Kurt who works for The Chocolate Inn. It was a total surprise and his gift to us.

This wedding was really special to us because it involved just our immediate family and best friends. There were only 24 people, and my best friend, Crystal, planned and surprised us with every detail. We had no idea what we were walking into (I didn't even know the color pattern). I left it in her hands, and she knew me all too well. She managed to incorporate our mad love for all things Star Trek and LEGO in the most tasteful, classic way possible. I mean, when I walked into the restaurant, I didn't even see how she had the Federation symbol turned into a damask pattern for the table runner and background. Every little detail was so thoughtfully done, and I was really thankful for waterproof mascara. FRIENDS, MAN. THEY ARE THE BEST.

Tell us about the ceremony:

Our dinner first was incredible. Goodlake Restaurant is a small indie restaurant run by a brother and sister team who took such amazing care of our guests. Their beef tenderloin was to die for. I still dream of it.

We had readings from Pale Blue Dot and some Star Trek references.

We had very personal vows that we sent to our officiant, which he read. It turns out Jesse and I wrote almost identical things about each other. We laughed with our guests through the whole ceremony.

Tell us about your reception:

After the ceremony, WE DANCED and chatted our faces off. We got to talk to everyone heaps and enjoyed every moment. Afterwards Jesse and I went back to the hotel and stayed up talking about how amazing our night was until the wee hours of the morning.

Our first dance was to Lissie's cover of Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness Live".

What was your most important lesson learned?

A small wedding and not being a part of the planning... equaled a HUGE SUCCESS for us. I got to enjoy every moment by being so far removed from the process and got to spend all of my time at the wedding being in the moment with the people I love with the man I love most in the whole world. It was the most special night of my life.
