How to Style Activewear for Everyday Wear

There's no doubt that the athleisure trend has peaked. Sometimes it's difficult to determine whether a barre class has just let out or if the coterie of toned ladies in leggings and sweatshirts are simply fashionable friends leaving a brunch spot. What's not to like about a look that favors elastic waistlines and stretchy fabrics? Especially for brunch.

That's not to say that you can show up at your next dinner party in a tank top and drawstring shorts à la Richard Simmons. Here are some basic guidelines and street styles for working your workout clothes around town.

Mesh and Sports Bras

Off-duty models embraced the activewear-anywhere ethos early on. Understandably, their packed schedules and frequent wardrobe changes favor these easy separates.

Mesh shirts and mesh insets on pants, jackets and tanks introduce an airy element in athleisure clothes that can be subtly-or not-so-subtly-revealing. Mesh shirts over a sports bra or an opaque triangle bra are sporty and sexy. With the rise of the cropped tops and midriff-baring styles in casual wear, sports bras as shirts are also popping up. Whether under a mesh layer or stand-alone, the style is overly daring for everyday errands but perfect for the club or a concert. Pair both with jeans to elevate the locker room look.

Sweats

The much-maligned material-often associated with couch potatoes and overweight uncles-is seeing a resurgence on city streets. Model Dasha Denisenko (right) keeps it cozy while swathed in warm layers during New York Fashion Week. While at Coachella, where the temps swell, a festival-goer (above left) approaches the uncomfortable climate and crowds in a matching jersey set.

As seen on both, the trick to wearing sweats without looking like a bum is to accessorize normally. Leather boots, knitwear and jewelry help bring jersey out of the gym and into some of the most stylish settings.

Jerseys as Dresses

Why pull focus from your shirt with pants? If you can do without a bottom layer, then the trend seems to be to do so. At Coachella, we saw any number of ladies rocking sports or athletic jersey shirts with boy shorts or just sneakers. Naturally, you'll want to make sure that the shirt safely covers your derrière.

This sporty style favors bright colors and clean makeup. Sneakers are a great way to finish the outfit, although we also saw a lot of flatforms with the shirt-as-dress style. And for those moments when you're not sure how high your hem will hike up, a jacket or another shirt tied around the waist gives you a few extra inches of coverage.

Track Pants

Once you introduce a pair of track pants into your day-to-day wardrobe, you'll want to wear them every day. No longer strictly the uniform for competitive runners or the slacks of slackers, these comfortable and surprisingly flattering pants are now an essential streetwear style.

Like the other athleisure pieces, the key to wearing track pants is to elevate them by what you pair them with. A slide or a mule for a shoe still looks laid-back but is less expected than a sneaker. Blouses and denim jackets also help to take the stripey style to the street.
