Competitions, reality shows, dramatic narratives: these things all rely on polar opposites and extremes, right? The good guy, the bad guy. The one in white, the one in black. The frontrunner, the underdog. We're not saying which is which by any means, and we certainly don't mean to pit one against the other, but we were able to catch only two CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund shows this week: Jonathan Simkhai, which we shared with you Monday, and then Gypsy Sport, on Tuesday afternoon.

That these two labels are so wildly different is a sign (as if you needed one) that the CFDA/Vogue team is doing it right. They're bringing a variety of perspectives, styles and influences into the mix and weighing them all equally, as if to say, " Who knows what the future of American fashion has in store?"

Here's what we captured of designer Rio Uribe's street-driven " eclectic, ethnic, athletic, genderless" collection-and Fashion Fund judge Jeffrey Kalinsky's thoughts after the show.

Considering the global influences in play these days-and the '90s vibe that just continues to pulse and pulse and pulse-we dubbed the collection " ravers without borders." Uribe is tapped into the sport aesthetic for sure, and he has a strong cult following the way a lot of exciting streetwear upstarts do-and a lot of them showed up at Milk Studios. They have their own codes and their own cues; they're a clan.

Uribe got a great deal of his training at Balenciaga under Nicholas Ghesquière, but his point of view is, as he told Paper magazine, "about third-world sensibilities or about an artifact you'd find on another planet. It's not so much about 'gypsy' or 'sport' individually, but how the words, when combined, become something unique."

We wondered about Kalinsky's take as we watched him across the aisle where he sat front row with his peers and fellow panel members.

"I think he has creativity coming out of his pores," he told us via text afterward. And that about sums it up.
