How to Treat Split Ends Without Getting a Haircut

via

It seems as if you JUST got a haircut and now you're noticing more split ends. What the heck?! Those little forks in the (hair) road have got to go, but what if you just can't get a haircut right now (or plain don't want to)? It can be tempting to just peel them apart or pick them off - a BIG no-no, btw. We've got a better idea. Well, a few, really ...

Get a Brazilian Blowout

Nothing seals the strands like a Brazilian blowout! According to Anna Wiles of Cush Salon in Beverly Hills, this is the best way to hold onto inches if you're desperate to eliminate split endswithout a cut. "The keratin acts as a "glue" and seals the cuticle, which inevitably seals the split end," she says.

The other upside is that while the treatment mends and seals broken hair fibers, it also leaves frizzy strands smooth for three to six months (depending on how you take care of your hair)!

Use Masks & Treatments on a Regular Basis

Wiles also recommends monthly masks to help temporarily treat split ends. "Be sure to find one that fits your oil, hair and scalp description. If you have oily hair or an oily scalp, consider something more volumizing (not so moisture-driven) and vice versa for dry hair."

Another option is to integrate products into your hair care routine that are specifically formulated to treat breakage and split ends. Redken Extreme Anti-Snap / Distressed Hair Treatment is an award-winning leave-in treatment for damaged hair that repairs, strengthens and protects against breakage and split ends. And Redken Extreme Length Sealer - Treatment for Distressed Hair is formulated with biotin and works as a sealing agent to target split ends. All you do is swipe your strands with the built-in brush and it seals your split ends!

Another way to keep those split ends at bay is by regulating your hot tool usage. "If heat is a must (duh.), always be sure to use a great heat protectant," says Wiles. "Using one will defend the integrity of your hair and cut back on a lot of breakage."

Product Recommendations: Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Flat Iron Perfector Straightening Mist, Matrix Heat Resist Iron Tamer Smoothing Lotion, L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Thermal Smoother Cream, Kérastase Huile Céleste

While all useful, it's still important to remember that no method will replace the results of a good 'ol haircut! "The only way to prevent split ends is by getting regular haircuts," says Wiles. "Split ends can actually become a split hair shaft if not tended to regularly. I can't stress the importance of even just a trim!"
