Laura from AV Bridal:The seeds for AV Bridal were sown by my own wedding. I wanted a big vintage do, but didn't have a budget. The solution quickly became clear...learn how to do things myself! That's the main reason our dresses don't cost as much as some other places - I want to help people achieve the wedding they have always dreamed of.

For my dress I hunted down the style I had always wanted. Unfortunately, the one I could afford was a bit unloved so I set about having it restored. I loved working with the seamstress. I learnt all about the tiny details that make a wedding dress so special. I've embraced what I learnt and ensured that every element of what we do is special - from the moment your dress is delivered you'll be excited about the AV Bridal package in front of you.

It has taken a while to get AV Bridal going; from sourcing the right dresses and restoring them, to building a website and having pictures taken, it was a lot of work. (We also had our first child at the end of January, which added to the chaos.) But it has all been a fantastic journey and so worth it.

I love hunting out vintage pieces; trawling through dozens of things that aren't quite right before finding that one item that is just perfect. Knowing it will be someone's wedding dress is such a delightful pay-off - I adored my vintage dress so it is such a fantastic feeling knowing you will help a bride find the dress of her dreams. Our whole collection really is lovingly handpicked.

You could definitely describe it as a "family-run business" as it is me and Mum at the heart of it, with my Husband and Dad providing help with the less glamorous areas of setting up a business (the two of them have become spreadsheet experts).

I've always been interested in vintage design - whether it is the unashamed glamour of the 1920s or the more outrageous use of colour from the 1960s. Our wedding day was heavily influenced by classic-1920s and 30s looks, but I enjoy piecing an array of eras together to make something a bit different; we have an orange chair in our living room that is straight out of an office in Mad Men and a gorgeous old Singer sewing machine table; somehow it works together. It is great fun discovering what you can do with different vintage pieces.
