Effortlessly Cool Cinema Museum London Wedding

Effortlessly Cool Cinema Museum London Wedding

Laura and Elliot are one of those couples who are just effortlessly cool. They had a relaxed approach to their wedding planning and wanted a day which was fun. They tied the knot on the 24th May 2014 at The Cinema Museum followed by a pub reception in London.

The majority of their wedding was home-made, with loved ones all pulling together to create a personal feel. They made their own canapés, wedding cake and arranged the pretty blooms too.

The bridesmaids wore vivid orange frocks, Laura looked stunning in a Mori Lee gown and Elliot looked dapper in a The Kooples suit. Love love love.

Thanks goes to the brilliant Lucius Fox Photography for sharing his photographs today.

THE PROPOSAL | A bunch of us went out to karaoke. We were having an amazing night and everyone was on great form. I went out to get a drink and when I came back in the room our favourite song was playing so Elliot gave me a mic. Suddenly our names popped up as part of the lyrics on the screen. I thought it was odd but carried on singing along. The last screen read 'Elliot has something to ask you', and then the song faded out and he got on one knee. Before he'd even asked me I shouted 'Yes, absolutely yes!' Whilst I was looking at the screen, our friends had revealed a banner behind us and then there was cheering, champagne and confetti cannons. It was amazing he'd managed to surprise me after exactly 9 years and 51 weeks together. The whole thing was pretty technically elaborate too - I was impressed.

THE VISION | We wanted it to be relaxed and fun. That was the whole brief.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We enjoyed lots of the planning - thinking about nice touches. It would have been better to have had less time to plan. It would have made us more decisive in the earlier stages.

THE VENUE | The Cinema Museum then The Dog House in Kennington, London.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I wore Mori Lee 4705 - I bought a sample dress and tweaked it by adding straps.

In the evening I wore a copper lamé dress from Whirling Turban.

FINDING THE DRESS | My mum, my sister and I spent a day in Worcester looking for dresses. We went to a dressmaker and she sussed out what suited me - what waist and neckline I should have. I almost went for a custom made dress but then realised I could get what I was looking for by tweaking something ready made. My mum and sister helped a lot.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Elliot got his suit from The Kooples in the sale. His dad wore one that was really similar which looked cool, and the groom party wore navy knit ties.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We spent ages trying to find readings that weren't too schmaltzy. In the end we chose a quote from First and Last Men by Olaf Stapledon, and an extract from a William Carlos Williams poem.

We walked in to the theme tune from Quantum Leap. In place of a hymn, the best man, Nick Trepka, led the congregation in an arrangement of Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up'. It was awesome.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My sister Amanda Bassett, Sian Drinkwater, Amber Harwood and Becks Dawkins. They were all amazing. The groomsmen were just incredible - Nick Trepka and Will Graddidge. Our superstar pageboy was Billy Underhill and our Pageboy Wrangler was Tom Underhill (by brother in law).

THE FLOWERS | This was a bit of a panic - I thought I could make my own teardrop bouquet, but that was a lot tougher than I realised. My dad made lovely posies for the bridesmaids and my sister made my bouquet at about midnight the night before the wedding.

THE CAKE | I wasn't the most organised bride - we were making canapés, doing the flowers, and making the cake until gone midnight the night before the wedding. The cake was a krispie cake, with an incredible personalised topper that my mum made. I made the first tier and didn't put in enough Mars bars so I have a memory of people scraping together tiny fragments of it and eating it off the table at the Dog House at about 2am.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The best - Matt Jones.

We are so happy we found him to be our photographer. His style is amazing and he is a pleasure to have around - he just manages to get the right shots without being at all obtrusive. He is also really thoughtful in the way he approaches his work. He even sent us a card with some of our pre-wedding shoot pics just before the wedding.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Elliot's dad is a graphic designer so helped with loads of stuff - the invitations, the order of service, our wedding favours (tea towels with our 'logo' on them). Elliot's amazing mom, aunts and cousin made loads of canapés, brownies, and brought American cinema sweets. My mum did tons - welsh cakes, that wedding topper and yet more canapés. Mum, Amanda and I decorated The Dog House with fairy lights and organza. My dad made chutney. We had a popcorn cart and amazing pizza from Well-Kneaded Wagon. Downstairs in the screening room we showed a film our friends had made for my bridal shower. It was a Team America style telling of the story of our relationship and it was fantastic. We were really pleased we hired the light up dancefloor for The Dog House too. Both families and all our friends did too much to list including lugging boxes and boxes of stuff between venues.

THE HONEYMOON | Elliot's mom helped us out so much here. We stayed at the Paloma Renaissance in Antalya, Turkey. Ellen works for a travel company so she managed to get us upgraded into a swanky room and they treated us amazingly.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The son and father dance off, our nephew bouncing across the stage during the ceremony, the speeches (my longest serving friend Sian Drinkwater kicked ass, I was super proud of my dad and we were bowled over by our best men). The ceremony was Humanist and was conducted by Isabel Russo - she was amazing and made it so personal and fun. It was phenomenal.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | If you can find a point person to help make sure the day runs smoothly, you should. Raph was ours and she was an absolute gem. Main advice is - don't sweat the small stuff and be prepared for people to be very nice to you, it's almost overwhelming!
