Elegant New Years Eve Wedding in Cornwall | Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

Setting a wedding date can be a tricky start to wedding planning, but not for Rob and Claire who knew that they wanted to marry on New Years Eve. On a sun shining winters day they tied the knot in a church ceremony followed by a reception at Trevenna Barns , Cornwall.

They had a vision of a relaxed atmosphere for their wedding, which they achieved to perfection. I love the icy cool pale blue colours, the fresh blooms and the Live, Laugh, Love décor in the marquee.

Claire looked radiant in her Eden by Jenny Packham embellished dress which she wore with Rachel Simpson shoes while the flower girls looked adorable in white. Soooo gorgeous.

Thanks so very much to the fabulous Theresa Furey for sharing her images today.

THE PROPOSAL | Rob had planned to propose whilst we were holidaying in Dubai. The week before we flew he'd had a tough week and so I'd bought him a card and silly gift to cheer him up. He opened it and then blurted out "Marry me". I burst into tears and after a few seconds said "You can't take it back you said it so you can't take it back, that would be mean." He replied "Is that a yes?"

THE VISION | We knew we wanted to get married on New Years Eve. We were really lucky to have very lovely friends who had got married the previous NYE and were really cool with us getting married on their 1 st anniversary plus it's Claire's brother's birthday so it was always gong to be a party atmosphere.

We wanted a relaxed atmosphere and for everyone to relax, mix and just have a good time so everything came back to that point.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We had no idea what we really wanted in terms of theme we just knew we wanted it relaxed and as stress free as possible. We wanted the whole process not just the day to be fun.

We booked the venue and the church first and were really lucky as the venue had loads of helpful tips about what to do and when. There are random things you never even think of so having a venue that were able to offer advice was really useful.

We focused on the stuff that can get stressful first to get that out of the way so we could get on and enjoy the fluffy stuff and that worked out really well.

We used a US site for our invites which was brilliant and pretty much gave us the theme Live, Laugh, Love.

I (Claire) signed up for a pinterest account which I used a bit but actually preferred using a scrap book which was actually really good fun and a nice keepsake and Rob even had a section although he swore me to secrecy :0) There are loads of online tools to help manage budget, timings etc. We used excel as I am a spreadsheet girl , I am shamed to admit.

It really was a bit of a patchwork quilt wedding, which thankfully came together and reflected us perfectly. I think the fact we had no preconceptions of what we waned really helped we didn't have a picture in our heads so it kind of evolved.

We were also incredibly lucky to have awesome families who offered advice but didn't thrust it upon us and who also were not demanding at all about the guest list and hence we didn't have to invite long lost family who we last saw in 1981.

BUDGET | I had no idea about how much weddings can cost and it is so easy to lose control. To be honest no idea what the average wedding costs, ours was £25k but we had exactly what we wanted.

We are really lucky to have been able to pay for it ourselves and have jobs that meant we could save enough to not to require a loan.

THE VENUE | Trevenna Barns, St Neot, Cornwall (where Claire grew up).

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress: Jenny Packham Eden. Ivory Shoes: Rachel Simpson.

FINDING THE DRESS | Tip: I was amazed at how early you have to order a dress, be warned you need that sorted earlier than you realise.

I wasn't bothered about the dress (bit of a tomboy). It was lovely to involve both Mums and my best mates. We had an amazing shopping trip in Cornwall, they really looked after me and made me feel really special (I hate shopping and dresses) and I had so much fun which surprised me. I found a dress I Iiked and didn't think I was the kind of girl who would have that "that's the dress moment" so was like cool I'll order that one. However before I got around to ordering it a friend at work who was getting married a few months before us and she suggested I just visit The Mews in Bristol for the experience and to just make sure I was happy with the dress in Cornwall.

So Mum came up to stay for a weekend and we had a mother and daughter day. When looking through magazines every dress I liked was a Jenny Packham but I'm 5ft and a size 12 so I thought I was too short and curvy to pull it off. I walked in and the dress I'd seen and loved was right in front of me. Rebecca at The Mews suggested I try it on just to see and so I chose a few others and off we went. You can guess what happened it was the last dress I tried on and as I walked out I looked at my Mum and said "I've found the dress" and then burst into tears. So much for being a tomboy! I felt so comfortable in it which was exactly how I hadn't felt in any of the others.

You do know when you've found the dress, it is true.

The girls at The Mews, Bristol were amazing throughout.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Rob didn't want to do the classic morning suit but still wanted a traditional kind of look with a twist. Rob is also ex infantry and so most of the groomsmen were soldier buddies. The final look was morning suits (no hats), grey waistcoats blue shirts and regimental ties (for each of their specific regiments) which we bought for them all as an additional gift. For those that weren't ex military we bought very lovely silk ties. Having the ties in all different colours worked really well and added that twist we were looking for. They all looked amazing.

For Rob we also added some gorgeous blue braces and black Loakes. He looked so handsome and again was really comfortable it was him all over and perfect.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | My aunt who is also my godmother helped us choose the religious reading and read it for us. We wanted something different but that would reflect how we felt but that wouldn't be too heavy for those who may not be religious. We went with Song of Solomon.

For the other reading we knew immediately Pam Ayres I Will Marry You. It was perfect, funny, light and had lots of lines we relate to. Rob's brother read it perfectly and there was an amazing moment as he walked back to his seat his two year old daughter Sophie who was our flower girl could be heard saying "I love you Daddy" as he walked past her. Everyone's hearts melted.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My best friend Jo was my maid of honour. She was incredible throughout she knows me so well and was kept everything calm. I can never thank her enough and felt so lucky to have here there next to me. She looked incredible. We had a few false starts with her dress. I wanted to get her a dress she would wear again and we found a few however had issues with beads falling off etc etc. We finally found a beautiful dress on my hen do, my Mum spotted it and when Jo walked out of the changing room we all knew it was the one. It was an ankle length, baby blue pleated halt neck. Incredible but a bit chilly for NYE so wraps were next on the list.

The other bridesmaids and flowerily (our nieces) all had ivory dresses from John Lewis and wraps form Monsoon. Hannah our eldest niece is very tall for her age and all the dresses that fitted her were a bit grown up and not comfortable so we found a design she liked online and got it made. That was probably the only slightly stressful bit as my brother lives in France so it was quite tough to organise with the distance. Hannah only tried it on for the first time the day before the wedding and alterations were made overnight! Phew we made it and Hannah looked gorgeous, as did they all.

Barbara the dressmaker was incredible!

THE FLOWERS | Anemones, silver berries, silver thistles. The brides also had a necklace (£5 from Dorothy Perkins) wrapped around the bouquet which looked amazing.

The boys has thistles with the groom and bestman and groom having an anemone as well as a thistle. The mothers both had corsages that reflected the bouquets.

Fleurtations in Bodmin were brilliant as they changed a few times as the colours of the wedding changed - to match the mad of honour's dress (initially navy blue, to silver to bronze/gold finally and then to baby blue)

THE CAKE | Our close friend Ruth makes cakes professionally at Curtis & Co and wow she did an amazing job. We knew we wanted a simple Victoria sponge but with the size of the guest list Ruth totally nailed it with an amazing tiered cake. It looked awesome and tasted even better.

She also made mini jammie dodgers for the wedding favours which down rather well.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Theresa we met at our friends wedding the year before. An incredible reportage style who was brilliant at getting stuck in and helping sort stuff on the day not just taking amazing pics.

It was meant to be. At our friends wedding I'd asked Theresa for her advice should we find a photographer near the wedding who lived near us In Cheltenham. Theresa's in laws live just up the road from my folks so that was it we knew we'd found our photographer and the job was done!

Incredible pics and we have a lovely a lovely new friend. Oh and Theresa introduced us to our band - Ear Candy, Oxford based and brilliant!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We wanted a chilled look which reflected the live, laugh, love theme. We sourced all décor from all sorts of places, online, independent shops, national retailers. It was brilliant fun. Key places were: Lah De Dah Cheltenham, Not on the Hight Street ,Ebay, Lights4fun, The Range, Hobbycraft.

We loved the candy buffet and having the pics of all the generations weddings we have kept and everyone really loved that. None of which was our idea all thanks to wedding mags and pinterest!

The chinese lanterns were a local supplier suggested by our venue, he was brilliant and we simply gave him our colour scheme and when we arrived they were up and finished off the venue.

THE HONEYMOON | We leave next week for safari in Kenya and then beach time in Zanzibar - 2 weeks can't wait!!!!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | For Claire standing at the alter with my Dad on one side and Rob on the other, holding their hands. It was the perfect moment.

Watching everyone on the dance floor having a blast all generations from 18 months to over 70 years they were all up and loving every second. It was a blast!!!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Do what you want and enjoy the lead up not just the day. It really doesn't have to be stressful . Just love every second. We got married at 2pm and we think this meant the day didn't fly by as we weren't rushing around. It was brilliant! Oh and the day before the wedding find even just a few minutes to sneak away just the two of you and take it all in. That moment is incredible.
