How to Beat Winter Static, Because It's Literally the Worst

Here at Makeup.com, we are lucky enough to have a panel of experts to sound off on those topics that leave the everyday girl scratching her head. Today, for example, we asked hair guru Craig Wcislo to give us the scoop on how to prevent dreaded winter frizz.

Winter is an amazing time to experiment with your beauty style. Between the holiday parties, clothes and makeup, anything goes. There's one thing that poses a threat to these possibilities: winter weather. The icy temperatures and blustery winds can mean disaster for your look, especially your hair. Admit it, there's nothing like frizzy hair to ruin a whole look, right? Check out my hair tips on how to prevent and get rid of static.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

A great place to start fighting the frizz is with a moisture-based conditioner. Go for a formula that's a bit heavier than your normal conditioner. Try a formula like Redken Clear Moisture Conditioner.

If you have textured or coarse hair follow this up with a small dollop of leave-in hair oil. Some of my favorites are L'Oréal Professionel Mythic Oil , Shu Uemura Essence Absolue, or Kérastase Elixer Ultime Hair Oil. Make sure to apply the oil to damp hair before styling and re-apply later in the day or in the days that follow to tame any flyaways that may pop up. Oils are preferred to silicone-based formulas, as oils will also nourish the hair, while a silicone just sits on the outer surface of the cuticle.

With curly hair, try a cocktail blend of leave-in moisturizer and curling cream and re-apply the moisturizer during the day if your hair starts to frizz. Try products like Pureology Super-Smooth Smoothing Cream and Garnier Curl Sculpting Cream Gel.

If you have straight hair and you don't want the weight of an oil, use the not-so-secret hairdresser trick of spraying a flexible-hold hairspray directly onto a bristle hair brush before running the brush through your hair. This will seal any flyaways instantly.

What if your hair is already in the frizz zone? There are a few products designed just for that! Kérastase Carré Lissant looks like fabric softener sheets, but smoothing the top surface of your hair with one of these immediately tames the most rebellious frizzies. Keep a pack in your purse or at your office desk to keep your hair in check all day long!
