Lies We Tell the Dermatologist

Lies We Tell the Dermatologist

Fess up! You've told one (if not all) of these white lies at one point or another to save your own skin. But trust us, when it comes to your complexion, being open and honest about your bad behavior can mean the difference between constant breakouts and a flawless complexion!

The Truth: Well, almost every day. Sometimes. In the summer. Like, when I go to the beach ... if I remember to bring it with me, which is usually never.

The Problem: Like that morning cup of coffee, sunscreen is a vital part of your daily routine. Whether it's 90 degrees and sunny outside or snowing like there's no tomorrow, protecting your skin from damage caused by UVA and UVB rays is a must - no ifs, ands or buts.

The Truth: Er, except when I stroll in at 2 a.m. Or had a rough day at work. Or fell asleep watching Netflix. Or was just too lazy. But, a facial wipe counts, right?

The Problem: Leaving makeup on overnight means clogged pores, and clogged pores means pimples (along with wrinkles, dull skin, etc.)! We know that fessing up to this habit might mean getting the evil eye from your derm, but it's for the best. Maybe hearing the effects of sleeping in makeup from a professional will make you change your ways!

The Truth: I swear I didn't touch them. OK, I did.

The Problem: Popping a pimple incorrectly leaves your skin at risk for hyperpigmentation and even a possible infection. Plus, a derm can always tell if you've picked at your face. Fessing up allows your dermatologist to prescribe the appropriate medication or topical ointment in order to help address your skin concerns. Now, doesn't that sound better than having to deal with scarring?

What You Say: "These are the only products that I use."

The Truth: Along with the three over-the-counter acne pads and creams I smother on my face and the DIY facial mask Grandma taught me that contains everything in the refrigerator.

The Problem: Not disclosing your complete skincare routine could mean that you're omitting very important information, even if you may not think it means much. The best thing you can do is bring in a bag with all of the products you use, from cleansers and toners to masks and moisturizers. One of the ingredients in these products (or your DIY treatments) could be the reason you're breaking out!

The Truth: I consider pizza to be a vegetable.

The Problem: We all know how vital a healthy diet is, especially when it comes to your skin. While we love pizza as much as the next person, regular consumption of junk food can trigger skin issues like acne breakouts and wrinkles. If you're noticing changes in your skin, be honest about what you're eating, as your dermatologist may suggest a healthy skin diet full of fruits and veggies!

" What You Say: I'm using the prescribed medication as directed."

The Truth: I forgot all about it for months and it's probably buried somewhere under all of my hair ties and bobby pins.

It's important to remember that if you want to see improvements in your skin, hiding facts from your dermatologist will only set you back. The more information you can disclose, the more your derm has to work with. Because you're both working towards the same goal - a flawless complexion!

The Problem: Following a regimen your dermatologist created for you is the key to getting your skin back on track. If you're not using a product as suggested, tell the truth, otherwise your derm may want to prescribe a higher dosage thinking your current one isn't working - and that doesn't help anyone!
