5 Makeup Brushes Every Girl Should Own

Newsflash: Makeup doesn't magically appear on our faces. As much as we would love to have a flawless face at the snap of a finger, it just doesn't work that way. There are tools needed to make sure our makeup is blended and applied to perfection. But, with so many brush options out there, it's hard to decide which ones you simply have to have in your life, right? To help us get to the bottom of this conundrum, we asked makeup pro Emily Oliver to fill us in on some of her fave makeup brushes of all time!

Foundation Brush

A flawless foundation application is probably one of the most important steps in your makeup routine as it sets the tone (literally) for your entire look. That's why you need a tool that will get the job done right every time. Oliver's foundation brush of choice is the Giorgio Armani Designer Foundation Expert Shaping Brush because it's effective and luxurious. "One swipe perfectly applies all types of foundation (from CC cream to full-coverage formulas) evenly onto the skin."

Concealer Brush

No one has perfect skin. We all get a blemish or two (or more) from time to time, so it's important to have a tool that can help you cover up those imperfections when they pop up unannounced. To get the right amount of coverage, try a synthetic brush like Lancôme Concealer Brush #8. Its tapered edge allows for precise and more controlled application.

Blush Brush

In terms of importance, blush and bronzer are right up there with foundation. So, getting a brush that caters to both of these staples is pure makeup gold. The Urban Decay Naked Flushed Double-Ended Brush is a must-have as it delivers flawless application of blush, bronzer and highlighter. Yes, please!

Eye Shadow Brush

Every girl ( even those who don't do eye shadow) should own a basic eye shadow shader brush. You never know when your lids are going to need a little subtle color or sparkle. Enlist a brush that makes the job simple for you. " Giorgio Armani Eye Shader Brush is the best brush for applying base coat shadows and even cream shadows," says Oliver. "Its width is perfect for quick application. I love to apply Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill shadow with this brush."

Eye Shadow Blending Brush

If you can't seem to blend your shadow right, it's probably due to the fact that you're using the wrong blending brush. Eye shadow blending is a very specific technique that requires the right tool. Oliver says she loves her blending brush ( YSL Eye Blending Brush Long) so much, she decided to stock up. "I have six of these brushes," says Oliver. "It's my absolute go-to for blending shadow. The length of the brush is ideal for getting a photo-shopped look in real life!" Pro tip: When blending, Oliver says to start from the inside of the eye and work outward - that way, lighter colors on the inside of the eye will not become clouded or muddy from the darker shadows on the crease or outer lid.

Now that you've got your brush game down, time to move on to more makeup tips and tricks!
