They say the beauty is all in the details.

And when it comes to Maria and Matthieu's big day in Northern France, this couldn't be more true.

Despite being something of a wash-out weather wise, they mixed things up, moved around their DIY decor, and created a day that was just as beautiful as the one they had imagined.

And it was all captured by the wonderful Marine Szczepaniak Photography.

Lace ribbons and burlap embellishments set the tone for a rustic celebration that was inspired by Maria and Matthieu's months of Pinterest browsing!

From the vintage VW to the antique furniture, there was a whimsical retro feel, while pink blooms, green foliage, coral windmills and white lace tied the look together, with some personal finishing touches from Maria and Matthieu's own home.

Our Wedding

When we decided to get married, it was obvious that we didn't want a classic wedding. We dreamed about a friendly, intimate and simple evening. We invited just our family and the closest friends. For the decoration, we also wanted to stay in this authentic, natural spirit. With craft paper, burlap and pretty flowers, with pastel, pink, coral, peach and mint as the colours. The venue also had to follow this directive. Not just a room, with a caterer and set menu. We we very lucky to find an inn where we were able to create a rural dinner. From Pinterest, we had lots and lots of decorating ideas. And although we weren't able to do some of them because of the bad weather, we realised our union was what was really important. To be surrounded with our friends and with our family to share this beautiful moment.

The Attire

I wore a very beautiful Cymbeline dress, on which I added a small lace bolero and discreet diamonds. On my feet, I wore a pair of open-toe ballerina pumps, so I wouldn't be taller than my husband, but also for comfort! I wore something old and borrowed, my youngest sister's handkerchief from her childhood, it hung on my underskirt and a small message written in blue under my shoe.

The Decor

My bouquet was magnificent! Carnations, roses, hypericum, astilbe and eucalyptus, decorated with pretty lace. Flowers and laces were continued in the rest of the decor. We had lots of DIY touches because I adore that! We featured lots of the small windmills decorated both the tables and areas outside. It was important to me to feature lots of bells and ribbons. In the months leading up to the wedding, we collected glass jars to customize with lace and burlap. I wanted decorations that looked in place with the venue and fell in with the charming feel of the surrounds. The ivy also was important along with the old objects, which looked perfectly in place. We thought a lot about the wedding favours, and decided to give them a badge signed by In My Drawers, an artist whom we adore. On the badge was a combi WV, a reminder of our wedding car. Unfortunately, all were not used because of the weather. The meeting with our photographer was just magical. A few months before our wedding, our original photographer told us she was pregnant, so couldn't work at our wedding. We found Marine Szczepaniak and it was as if it was meant to be. More than just a photographer, we found a professional who was competent, talented but also incredibly an kind person, and now, a friend! She captured us so discreetly and today her beautiful photos reminds of our magical day.

The Photography

Our day was unique and so personal to us. But our wedding was also a real tornado! Between showers, thunder storms and a meteorological orange alert, we still had one of the most beautiful days of our life. Everything passed fast, almost too fast. Our preparations were punctuated with a heap of small incidents, bad luck, and other small concerns - just like everyday life. But always, until today, we faced the events together and took them as they came, it left us a more solid couple. A wedding in the rain is not necessarily a bad thing! Our advice for future newlyweds? It's easy, imagine your dream wedding and spend hours on Pinterest! Create a wedding that's authentic to you, not staged, choose decorations that suits you. In the schedule of your day, remember to take time for yourselves, don't worry about the decorations or the bridesmaids dresses, because otherwise, you'll miss this magical moment. The moment when your eyes meet for the first time, despite all the excitement around you, you'll both feel alone in the world, and rocked by a wave of incredibly intense love!

So many charming details! I love the use of ivy too, it seems to be making a bit of a comeback for rustic weddings!
