Camping & Hockey Tournament Hand Crafted Field Wedding

Camping & Hockey Tournament Hand Crafted Field Wedding

Dave and Beth had a weekend of wedding celebrations back in August, which was so very personal to the both of them. With a hockey tournament where everyone joined in, to the egg cup favours due to their surname; every detail was super thoughtful.

There were an abundance of home grown sunflowers, bunting, delicious food and a live band.

Beth looked amazing in lace with her waterfall plaited hair, while the Dave wore a dapper blue suit. What a party!

Thanks so very much to Millie Benbow Photography for providing the stunning images today.

THE PROPOSAL | Delft, Holland - 30th May 2013. Our first holiday together was to Holland to visit Dave's older brother Rodney and his husband Hans. While out sightseeing we decided to climb the Nieuwe Kerk tower in Delft's market square, quite a feat especially as Dave doesn't particularly like heights. It has fantastic views of Delft and overlooks the Town Hall where Rodney and Hans got married in 2005. It is the second highest church tower in The Netherlands and was an experience that stuck in our memories as our relationship grew. 6 years and 360 steps later Dave got down on one knee at the top of the tower - of course I said YES. We celebrated that evening with Rodney and Hans in the restaurant where they had their wedding reception. It was a very special day.

THE VISION | Something fun and relaxed. We wanted a weekend wedding that involved camping, hockey, eating and drinking. No suits or satin just fun and laughter amongst friends and family.

We wanted to offer people a choice of accommodation from bringing their own tent or camper van, booking a Bell Tent or staying in a local hotel. Everyone really bought into the camping idea, we had over 100 people camp for the weekend.

Hockey is such a big part of our lives that we couldn't imagine getting married without involving it in our special day, so we decided to hold a hockey tournament. A lot of our friends play hockey and they thought it was a crazy but great idea. Others were very dubious until the day, when everyone got stuck in! We had everything from international hockey players to those that had never picked up a stick before, the latter being my Mum. Thankfully we had no injuries on the day and we may have even discovered a few stars of the future.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We looked at a few venues around Cheshire and Shropshire but because we wanted something quite different it was difficult to find a setting that could accommodate our ideas.

When we went to see the 'field' at Moat farm is was perfect. Peter Baka, our wedding planner was just brilliant and didn't say no to anything in fact he enhanced our ideas and told us how to make things achievable.

After exploring several Bell Tent companies we decided to book Cariad Canvas, they were so professional and took control of all the Bell tent bookings for us. The guys that assembled the tents were brilliant and created exactly what we wanted, the same can be said for when it was time to pack them all away.

The food was a big part of the weekend and Peter Baka organised it all for us. We wanted something easy going on the Friday evening so we went with a hog roast, it was perfect. Guest woke up to breakfast baps on Saturday morning and after the ceremony we served afternoon tea. Our main wedding breakfast meal was a South American BBQ. Delicious, everything went!

Once we had the venue, accommodation and food sorted we started to look at the entertainment for the evening. We hired The Big Beat band and the dance floor was full all evening. They were a big hit with everybody and Dave and I even did a bit of crowd surfing.

BUDGET | We did have a budget in mind but our main priority was to create a very personal wedding. We did a lot of things ourselves, with help from our families and friends.

THE VENUE | Moat Farm, Stapleton, Shropshire. It is a large 8 acre field with 4 large oak trees in it, as soon as we saw it we knew it was exactly where we wanting to get married.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress - Designed by Eddy K - Cheshire Bridal Wear. Shoes - The rainbow collection - Cheshire Bridal Wear. Jewellery - This was a present from Dave on the morning of the wedding. Bracelet - Star Stealer Jewellery - A present from my talented friend Gemma Church (Owner and creator of Star Stealer Jewellery).

FINDING THE DRESS | I found this the most stressful bit. I had no idea what I wanted. I took my mum with me and she was an absolute rock. We found 'the' dress at the North West Wedding fayre. After trying on many I spotted it on our way out of the showroom on a mannequin. My mum asked the lovely girls at Cheshire Bridal Wear if we could try it on and that's when I knew it was the one. I was so worried if Dave would like it but I was reminded that he usually sees me in a tracksuit so anything is a bonus! I felt really beautiful when I put it on and Dave loved it.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Next Blue suit, Blue Ted Baker belt, white shirt and pocket square, silver Silk tie. Howick Grey suede shoes with white soles and white laces. Groomsmen in the same suits but with yellow tie.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Dave found the readings for the wedding. We had one by Bob Marley and another by the Dali Lama. Those were read by our sibling's partners. The other reading was a poem read by Dave's sister Poppy Egerton and my cousins Charlie, Darcy and Harry Rimmer with James and David Forrest. They brought many people to tears during the ceremony including the readers themselves.

For the ceremony and drinks reception I hired Nero String Quartet as a surprise for Dave. They played Everlong by the Foo Fighters (our song) as I walked down the aisle. It was a really special moment.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My Bride's Mate was my older sister Ceridwen and my Mate of Honour was my friend Ruth. They could pick their own dresses and both looked stunning on the day.

I was lucky enough to have two hen do's a Family one and a Friend's one (although my mother and Aunty Helen came to both and were a big hit with my friends!) Both were uniquely brilliant and Ceridwen and Ruth did me proud as did all the other girls involved. My sister is so special to me and she went out of her way to make sure I got everything I wished for. Ruth has been a very good friend to me for many years now and is always sure to be close by with a glass of champers.

THE FLOWERS | My favourite flower is the Sunflower. Stunning and bold in its own right. My Aunty Frances grew a lot of the flowers for the wedding which made it really special.

THE CAKE | Cheese. A 14 kg wheel of Gouda from Holland with tiers of Cheshire (where we have made our home) and Shropshire blue.

We also had delicious cupcakes that went down a treat.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The lovely and extremely talented Millie Benbow Photography. I have known Millie and Jo for many years now as we met at University. It was a no brainer for us to hire them to photograph our wedding. We both felt so natural in front of them and they made everyone feel so at ease. Many of our friends have commented on how good they were on the day. The photographs are just amazing, looking at them transported us back to the wedding day, so many smiling faces.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | This was my favourite part of organising the wedding. I love to make things and I like to think I am quite creative. When I have a vision in my mind I like to see it come together. I made the cake topper, the name places which were egg cups chosen because Egerton, our marital name is often mispronounced "Eggerton" close friends get away with calling Dave "Egg", the favours - the men had a small glass bottle filled with blue curacao (the first drink Dave brought me) and the ladies had a little pair of Dutch clogs that I made into a magnet (brought in delft market square) and the hockey sticks which we personalised for the wedding hockey tournament.

My favourite creation was the seating plan. It was a large board with little sunflowers growing out of planters. Each sunflower had a name on its leaf informing guests where they would be sitting.

I am lucky that I come from a very talented family. My mum, aunty and I had a weekend away at my cousin Joanne's house where we made quilts and bunting while drinking lots of wine and catching up. The quilts were made as thank you presents to the family for all their help. Shropshire quilters also enjoyed making the quilts, and we were very grateful for their contributions - such a talented bunch! We put the quilts on the beds in the bell tents. They looked fantastic.

It was a real homemade family effort which made it all the more special.

THE HONEYMOON | We are off on honeymoon next year once the hockey season is over. We have booked to go to Mauritius and Dubai. Can't wait!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Dave's face as I walked down the aisle.

The rain clouds disappearing and the sun shining for the rest of the wedding after the ceremony in the marquee.

Beth hugging her dad as he handed her over to Dave.

Everyone enjoying the hockey tournament and having a great time.

The impromptu first dance that we hadn't planned to do!

The fireworks.

The crowd surfing.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Your friends and family love you for you are and what you do. So do what you want for your big day and they will love being a part of it.
