Carved straight into the rock, this Roman grotto has its own lift and a private terrace from which to enjoy unobstructed views of the Gulf of Naples. For me, its most spectacular feature is inside: a hydrotherapy massage pool at the foot of a vast four-poster bed draped all in white - it's heavenly.

Each of this cliffside retreat's seven rooms flaunts a unique colour scheme designed with thought and care. Ebony walls and a jet-black chandelier give the Black Suite seductive masculine appeal, but it's airy and soft-edged, too, with a bright white canopied bed and floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views over Rio and its glittering bay.

This Water Villa is such a special hideaway, with a private deck for sunbathing, a rock-hewn plunge pool and a ladder that drops straight to the kaleidoscope of fish in this eastern stretch of Vietnam's coast. My favourite thing about this room is the bath - a deep, wood-panelled affair with sweeping sea views - that's just made for watching the sun set over the sparkling waters.

On the unspoiled, less-visited shores of south-west Bali, the sublime minimalist Ocean Villas are set on glittering volcanic black sands.
