Handcrafted Rustic Lace & Hessian Marquee Wedding with a Benjamin Roberts Gown | Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

I love seeing wedding images where a couple are so very happy and clearly having a total ball all day, which is exactly what I have for you to take a peek at below...

WWW readers Matt and Annie married on the 10 th May 2014, with a meaningful church ceremony followed by a pretty hand crafted marquee reception. Ivory and taupe were the colours of the day, with touches of lace and hessian.

Annie looked stunning in her "Enchanted" by Benjamin Roberts gown, which she teamed with natural make up and a sweet half up half down hair style. There was a rustic cake, pretty blooms and a super stylish wedding party too. Perfection.

Thanks goes to James Green for providing the wonderful photography today.

THE PROPOSAL | Matt proposed on the site of our first date - Brandon Hill, Bristol. It was a typical English tea party with cupcakes, china pots and bunting. He was fairly confident of a positive answer so had a friend video the event, with amazing results!

THE VISION | We had a two-part wedding - a large church service (since we are both quite involved in our local church) with 300 people followed by 'Kaffee und Kuchen' a German tradition from Annie's family. We then had a smaller evening reception for 150 guests in a marquee.

The theme was classy vintage - ivory and taupe as colours; lace, and hessian as textures. Vintage suitcases meeting contemporary lettering inspired by some business cards Matt had hand-printed at a Christmas market in Berlin 2 years ago.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We had 9 months to plan and execute this wedding. The first dropbox folder appeared the evening of the proposal! We made use of google drive documents to help planning budgets and shared to-do-lists. The key step at first was meeting with wise older folks who planned a few weddings recently for family friends. We shared our 'big ideas' in a shared document which we then explored over date nights with a glass of wine. And of course - pinterest and wedding blogs such as WWW played a massive role in providing creative ideas and input. But we wanted to balance inspiration from the web with original ideas.

BUDGET | Not cheap, not extravagant.

THE VENUE | The venue for the reception was Matt's home - Ashley Down House, a 19 th Century mansion located in Cotham which he shared with 23 other people. The use of the property as a reception venue is open to residents only, so we took advantage of this opportunity and planned an English Garden party for the evening reception. The wedding ceremony took place at Woodlands church, which we both attend.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | The dress is "Enchanted" by designer Benjamin Roberts, and Annie got it at Clifton Brides. The pearl necklace was Annie's granny's, who passed away a few years ago. A great way to remember her whenever we will be looking at the photos.

FINDING THE DRESS | It was the first dress Annie tried on! The ladies at Clifton Brides were incredibly helpful and seemed to sense what we were after before we even had a clear idea ourselves.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Matt loves tailored suits, and Annie loves Matt when he dresses smart! We had a suit specially made by A Suit That Fits, once we had matched the colours to the bridesmaids dresses. We then chose groomsmen's attire based on these tones. The search for a matching tie was exhaustive, taking in Bristol and London and the world wide web. It was solved by an impromptu check inside a branch of Moss Bros!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | We're both regular churchgoers, so having readings from the bible was very important to us. Annie's Dad (a pastor in Germany) was a massive help in this regard, and helped us settle on Colossians chapter three verses 12-17. It speaks of the necessity of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience in a marriage. These are all values we wanted to affirm and are relevant to people of all faiths and none.

The music was contemporary in style but familiar in content. Friends formed a band of drums, guitars and keyboard, but a special twist was a small choir providing vocal arrangements. We met doing Christian music together, so this element was great fun to plan.

After the service, Annie's brother and our friend Mark performed a virtuoso jazz set from keys and sax.

Music for the evening was provided by friends of Matt - Baly's Cream Jazz for the garden party, and The Leroys for the evening dancing. Matt used to sing and play with the Leroys once upon a time. There was also the much anticipated debut of the Ashley Down House Reggae Orchestra and several guest performances from the wedding party!

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Finding bridesmaids dresses was one of the most stressful parts of the wedding planning. Our friend Carly suggested the dresses we eventually went for - beautiful dresses in a lovely muted colour that suited every bridesmaid. We got them from Debenhams.

THE FLOWERS | Our friend Beth got the flowers for us and Annie's mum made the stunning bouquets and flower arrangements for the tables. We couldn't have been happier with the results!

THE CAKE | Handmade by our friend and Matt's housemate Esther Green: traditional fruit cake decorated with seasonal flowers.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The utterly incredible James Green. An artist beyond compare, efficient and professional but incredibly fun. He has an eye for a shot but an ease of manner which is worth every penny. His posing is really helpful but natural. We can't recommend him highly enough. His offering is full of little personal twists and touches which we appreciated a lot.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Handcrafted over the long winter months, enabled by a wood burning stove and red wine. Hand decorating jam jars with lace and hessian was a particular highlight. We commissioned a handmade stamp for our invites which we liked so much that we had it scanned and turned into a vector graphic by Annie's sister, Kathrin, a graphic designer in Berlin. We then used the detail in lots of other bits and pieces to give a subtle 'branding' to the day. Matt's favourite projects were a pair of hand painted banners incorporating this design - hung between the pillars of the house entrance and above the top table in the marquee.

THE HONEYMOON | A week in Cornwall in a luxury cottage after a night in a posh hotel. We looked into flying somewhere hot and exotic but didn't want the hassle. We were blessed with the weather - the wind shook the marquee to its foundations on the wedding day, but we had 20 degree unbroken sunshine for the week after!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | For Matt - welcoming people to the Church. An incredible procession of loved ones, just the best feeling ever. Turning round during the entrance video and seeing Annie in her wedding dress for the first time. Annie's veil being blown off in the gale force winds on Brandon hill. A very touching speech made in English by Annie's Dad.

For Annie - Seeing the pretty bouquets my mum had made for us. Arriving at church - seeing how beautiful everything had been set up in the morning and walking past so many people we love. Matt's fantastic speech, especially when he did a bit in German! Dancing with German friends just like many years ago. The UK-Germany dance off on the dance floor, won by my incredible Bro (sorry Pez...) , and waking up the next morning without any to-do-lists to conquer, other than to go on honeymoon!!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Try and keep some space together away from 'Wedmin', focusing on the future marriage as much as the wedding day itself. Make use of the technology available, share folders and lists, it'll keep you sane, and you get the geeky reward of ticking things off when completed. Don't be afraid to ask for help and delegate to trusted friends. Have big discussions about big decisions when you're both fresh and not hungry. Sometimes it's worth spending more to save the extra faff of doing something yourself. Decide what matters most to you in a wedding and focus resources there - for us it was design, photos and the music.
