When it comes to beauty for the everyday girl, Team MDC has you covered in spades. But even the most bona fide beauty experts can use a little inspiration straight from the runway. Our friends at Beautystreams specialize in breaking down the latest trends in high fashion so that you can make the look work for you, catwalk optional.

To find true originality, we should look to indigenous cultures that, without outside influences and pressures, have built unique societies with their own rules and rituals. Native Americans captivate us with their resourcefulness and relationship to the natural world, qualities which are as important now as they were hundreds of years ago. The New Native trend channels the codes of such cultures, combining the functional and the beautiful for looks that, today, convey a modern, urban sensibility.

This is a look anchored by braids, though not the Maid Marion/"Game of Thrones" styles that resonate historically but can look a bit archaic in a contemporary context. Designer Yohji Yamamoto's collaboration with Adidas, Y-3, is centered on the concept of sporty elegance, with function at the heart at the collection. Appropriately, his models wear choppy hairstyles with long tails plaited into braids - messy, yet managed.

In other interpretations of braids worked in modern ways, Antonio Berardi frames wet combed hair with small side braids aside long dry locks; at John Rocha, the mohawk manages to look ladylike when formed into braids cascading down the model's scalp. And Moschino, always tweaking fashion codes for maximum fun, works a braided updo that references Native American styles in a very wearable way.

Adding to the exotic nature of the trend, glossy orchid shadow recalls the face painting embraced by so many indigenous cultures as expressions of beauty. Dark mascara underlines the impact of the unexpected shade, while natural brows keep the effect realistic rather than operatic. Lips are gleaming mauve or nude, and satiny foundation transmits skin's natural shine. With such colorful eyes, no blush is needed. Combining decoration and utility, the New Natives are as in tune with their modern environment as their aesthetic ancestors.
