Today on WWW is all about simplicity.

Katie and Adam married in August at Abden House at Pollock Halls, Edinburgh outside under a rose arch.

They envisioned a frill free day, with 4 guests in attendance their wedding was all about the love and their marriage. They opted for personal vows and no details or décor all within a $5000 budget.

Katie looked effortlessly beautiful in a custom made dress, with birdcage veil and her hair in a fishtail plait while Adam donned a sharp suit and sharp tie. There was also a pretty yellow, pink and blue bouquet and the sweetest bumblebee cake.

The Proposal… After being together for 5 years, the idea that we both wanted to get married wasn’t a surprise. We had been talking about it for years. As was only possible during a long-distance relationship, the proposal was done over Skype.

The Vision for the Day… I wanted the wedding to be one like our grandparents would have done: classy and memorable but without frills that would be better spent on a down-payment for a house.

The Planning Process… I only had 2 months to plan the wedding so that really reduced what really mattered to what was really possible. I did it without a wedding planner but there is not much a wedding planner could have done, all I thought about was the venue, dress, accessories, bouquet and boutonniere, cellist, cake, the restaurant for the reception, photographer, and the rings.

Budget… $5000

The Venue… Abden House at Pollock Halls.

The Dress + Accessories… The dress was done by the fabulous Lauren Wall, based in Edinburgh, who was an absolute delight to work with. The dress was custom made for me, which was an exciting experience. I loved being part of the collaborative process and to have a dress perfectly made for my measurements. For accessories I chose a birdcage veil, a gold leaf hair comb, gold starfish earrings, and mauve shoes. The pearl necklace is my grandmother’s.

Finding the Dress… I found the dress on Pinterest and knew that I had to have it immediately though the link was to a fairly dodgy mass wedding dress manufacturer located in China. I didn’t want to take the risk and thus opted to have it made.

Groom’s Attire… Dark royal blue suit with faint herringbone pattern also custom made with a custom made white dress shirt. His initials are embroidered on the cuff of his sleeve. His outfit was done by a bespoke suit company located in Toronto, Canada.

The Readings + Music… No readings, Adam and I wrote very personal vows that we read to each other the morning before the ceremony. For walking down the aisle, the cellist played The Swan from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saёns and for the closing of the ceremony the cellist did a cover of Yellow by Coldplay.

Beautiful Bridesmaids… My sister (and best friend) was the only bridesmaid and thus the Maid of Honour. I just told her to wear whatever she felt good in.

The Flowers… The flowers in the bouquet were pale yellow blousy roses, pale pink dahlias, and some small blue flowers. For the boutonniere there was a pale yellow rose and we thought a thistle would be very appropriate for our wedding in Scotland.

The Cake… We chose to do a lemon sponge cake with a lemon curd and buttercream filling. For the cake design we chose to have us represented as two bumblebees and a hive representing our new life together.

Your Photographer… Anna Urban.  We decided to go with Anna because of the natural and vintage style of her photographs. I thought she captured the day perfectly. We chose to go with a two-hour booking to save on costs and because the reception was such an intimate affair that we didn’t mind not having it documented.

The Details + Decor… Not much! We had a rose wedding arch.

The Honeymoon… One night in the Jacuzzi suite of the Nira Caledonia in Edinburgh. We will be doing a large Europe tour next summer when we have more time.

Memorable Moments… The beautiful weather (a rarity in Scotland), sharing a ton of laughs and smiles, and getting complimentary bubbly at the restaurant we went to, where we also got to meet the chef!

Advice for Other Couples… Remember that a wedding doesn’t make a marriage and don’t lose sight of the real purpose of the Big Day: You’re marrying the love of your life. That’s it. Many people tried to convince me to go for more expensive things, for example having Shellac nails versus a normal manicure etc., and these little details aren’t going to make for a happy marriage just a bigger deficit in your bank account. Keep it personal but don’t lose yourself in the millions of details that we’ve convinced ourselves we “need” for a perfect wedding. Just relax and have fun!
