Follow this and, I promise, it will improve your life exponentially: I realised a good few years ago that it is not my responsibility to make other people happy. Catering to someone else's unrealistic expectations, delusions or guilt trips will only make you feel shitty. Do not burden your mind but thinking that their happiness is your responsibility. It's not. Just as you are responsible for making choices to improve your life, they are responsible for making choices for themselves. That's not to say we shouldn't give a fuck about other people's feelings, of course we should, but don't put them before your own. It's not selfish to look out for yourself first - it's necessary!
