To Action or Not to Action

Going into 2014 I am looking to experiment with some new editing techniques. For the most part, I've never been a big PS Actions fan but I think with the right image it can work well. My problem is every time I try them out I can never decide if it looks good or not. There are too many choices and possibilities. Then I get frustrated and just stick with the natural look.
