The spectacular coastal route south of Naples has more than a passing waft of glamour thanks to its reputation as a bolthole for writers, film stars and fashionistas. Starting at Sorrento, the 40km drive to Ravello is a winding clifftop jaunt backed by lush forests. En route you'll pass the pretty towns of Positano and Amalfi, where pastel-hued houses stretch their toes down to the sea.

2) Icefields Parkway, Canada

Linking two of Canada's most jaw-dropping national parks through the Rockies in Alberta, the Icefields Parkway is 235km of heart-fluttering mountain vistas between Banff and Jasper. Valleys are splashed with turquoise lakes and waterfalls, and more than 100 glaciers dot the way; hiking trails allow further exploration. Wildlife such as moose and elk roams; pretty Lake Louise has a gondola to whisk you to one of the area's best grizzly viewing spots.

3) Pacific Coast Highway, USA

This panoramic highway follows the Pacific coastline, its crashing surf and migrating whales, for almost the entire length of America's western edge - but it's the California stretch (Highway 1) that's billed as one of the world's best road trips. Start in San Diego and finish north of San Francisco in the cliffside town of Mendocino (or vice versa) to take in hidden sands, beach towns and rugged Big Sur. Detour inland for world-class wine tourism at Napa and giant redwood forests.

4) Scotland's NC500

This new driving route loops the North Highlands, giving access to stunning beaches, lochs and mountains. You might spot dolphins, seals and puffins - not to mention castles, a whisky distillery and remote smokehouses.

5) Argentina's Ruta 40

This epic 5000km highway runs from the northern tip of Argentina right down to its Antarctic extremities in Patagonia, following the backbone of the Andes. The diversity of landscapes is extraordinary, from desert lunarscapes north of Salta to fertile vineyards in Mendoza, via alpine forests in the Lakes District around Bariloche and down to the Perito Moreno Glacier. Follow this road and you have the adventure itinerary of a lifetime.
