For many, glitter makeup may be designated to winter holiday parties (New Year's Eve, anyone?) and very special occasions. And while that's all well and good, the truth is, glitter is becoming much more commonplace, as evidenced on red carpets, runways and street style blogs everywhere. The trick? Keeping is mostly subtle with hints of shine here and there--but not everywhere!

And since we're big fans of glitter makeup, we think every part of the face is fair game. The lips, cheeks, eyes - you name it, we love it. However, for those of you who are just dipping your toes in the glitter pool, we've got the perfect eye makeup tutorial to get you started. We enlisted makeup artist extraordinaire Tara Shakespeare to create an eye look that truly has the Midas touch. For eyes that sparkle, give these gilded lids a try (they're easier to do--and wear--than you think!).

Look #1: 24 Karat Eyes

Step 1: Prime the lids

Try a formula designed to prolong your shadow, likeUrban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion . Make sure to not slather on too much, as it won't absorb as well and may cause your shadow to crease and look uneven. A pea-sized amount of primer for both eyes should be enough - just split it in half and apply half to each lid.

Step 2: Apply your base shadow

Use a flat shadow brush to apply a shimmery dark brown eye shadow (we love Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Dark Horse ) all over the eyelid, from lash lines to creases and from inner to outer corners.

Step 3: Press on a metallic shade

With your finger or a flat shadow brush, press a bronze metallic shadow onto the center of the lid. Make sure to pack it on until you reach the intensity you desire. This look is meant to be bold, so feel free to add an extra layer. Shakespeare used Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chrome in Bronze Sheen .

Step 4: Tap on glitter

Dampen a small shadow brush (by spritzing with a water bottle or dipping it in water and gently patting it against a towel to lose some of the moisture), then dip it into fine, loose gold glitter (try NYX Face & Body Glitter in Gold ) and tap it on top of the metallic pigment and along the center of the lower lash line. Be liberal with your glitter (but apply carefully as it can fall into your eyes and cause irritation) by layering it on until you get the shine and sparkle you want. Allow a minute or two for the glitter to dry onto the eyelids before moving on to the rest of the look.

Step 5: Line your lids

Lining is best done with a glitter liner pencil or liquid formula, or using loose, highly pigmented gold glitter. If going with the latter, make sure you mix a little Vaseline in with the glitter on the back of your hand and then apply the mixture with an angled liner brush. If you prefer a glitter eyeliner, we recommend Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Midnight Cowboy . Line the upper and lower lashlines and add an additional layer for extra pop.

Step 6: Brush on mascara

Curl lashes and apply black mascara to top and bottom lashes.

Look #2: Pastel Glitterati

Not into the gilded eye look? How about a softer, more everyday wearable version using shades of pale pink or peach. Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Prime the lids

Try a formula designed to prolong your shadow, like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion . Make sure to not slather on too much, as it won't absorb as well and may cause your shadow to crease and look uneven. A pea-sized amount of primer for both eyes should be enough - just split it in half and apply half to each lid.

Step 2: Apply your base shadow

Since the idea is to keep it subtle, use a base shade that's either pale pink, peach or champagne like Maybelline New York The Blushed Nudes . Using an eyeshadow brush, dust the color across lids from inner to outer corners and into creases.

Step 3: Press on glitter

Try a shadow that already has glitter flecks in the formula. The effect won't be as bold, but you'll end up with a wash of glitter over your lids. Try NYX Roll On Eye Shimmer

Step 4: Line lids

Using a soft dark brown pencil liner, draw a line that starts thin, and smudged tightly into the lashes at inner corners, and gets a bit thicker as you get to the outer corners of your eyes. Try L'Oreal Paris Infallible Never Fail Eyeliner in Black Brow n.

Step 5: Brush on mascara

Curl lashes and apply black mascara to top and bottom lashes.

Look #3: Silver Lining

If you want just a hint of glitter that doesn't wash all over the eyes, go with a liner look. Try a silvery-streak of shimmering liner across the top lash line . Just make sure to use a super-pigmented liner to get the most color payoff (you don't want it to be too subtle!). Here's how to do it:

Repeat Step 1 from above.

Step 2: Apply a base liner

Line the lid with a clear or white pencil liner first. Try

Step 3: Top with glitter

Trace a silver shade, like , over it to allow the color to really stand out.

Orif your liner doesn't have glitter already in it, then trace over your base liner with a loose glitter, using a eyeliner brush to press the glitter across your top lashline from inner to outer corners and flicked upward in a wing effect. Try NYX Face & Body Glitter in Crystal

Glitter Accents

Once you've mastered the eyes, we suggest you let that glitter migrate to other parts of the face. Check out our other suggestions for glitterific makeup.

Glitter Lips:

After the eyes, the lips are probably the next most common place to rock the sparkle. All you need is the lipstick color of your choice and a white or translucent loose glitter. Apply your lipstick as usual. Then, wet a lip brush, dip it into the glitter and pat the product onto the lips to make them sparkle. You can keep the glitter concentrated on the center of the lips and lightly feather it out to the sides. Clean up any fallout or lipstick with a cotton swab and makeup remover and you're good to go!

Glitter Cheeks:

A little (emphasis on the little) sparkle on the cheeks is great for those days you want to give those apples a little oomph. It's just a matter of getting your hands on a shimmery blush or some loose glitter to layer on top of your fave blush shade. Follow this tutorial for a step-by-step guide to shimmering cheeks.

Glitter Brows:

Talk about golden arches! Groom and fill in your brows as usual. Then, take a glittery bronze (for dark toned brows), gold or silver (for light to medium hue brows) pigmented shadow and brush it into the brows using a flat shadow brush (you can dampen it if you're having trouble making it stick). Make short hair-like strokes to work the product throughout. The effect is bold brows with a bit of sparkle, but not full-on glitter dusted.

How To Remove Glitter Makeup

Now that we've got you psyched to wear it, how in the world do you at the end of the day?! Glitter has a way of sticking around on your skin for days, and even transferring itself to your loved ones (you know your significant other wasn't wearing that sparkle yesterday!), but getting it off can be tricky. Here's what you need to know.

* Be gentle. When it comes to removing the glitter makeup around your eyes, you don't want to push into your lashes or cause irritation to your skin. So dampen a cotton pad with eye makeup remover then place it directly on top of your lid for a second or two. Begin to rub in circular motions, being cautious not to press too hard. Repeat until the glitter is gone or nearly gone. Try NYX Lip & Eye Makeup Remover

* Follow with cleanser. Avoid using scrubs, which can cause the glitter to scrape your skin, and instead use a clear or creamy cleanser to wash the rest of your face. Apply to a warm wash cloth and rub over your skin in circular motions. Try Lancôme Crème Mousse Confort Pat skin dry. And follow with moisturizer.
