One of the best parts of this job is hearing heartfelt stories from real couples about how much their weddings meant to them. You might remember our Snapshot of a Marriage series, for instance, where real couples give advice and share sweet stories about their marriages. In today's Vintage Bride, we're sharing the story of Lila and Morton who married on July 14, 1946 in New York City. Shira Savada, Real Weddings Editor at Martha Stewart Weddings will take it from here and share her grandparents' story...

It was the early 1940s when my grandfather Morton spotted my grandmother Lila across a room when they were both students at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. They quickly became inseparable and, after graduating in 1944, found themselves in the Big Apple. Two years later they made it official, marrying at The Pierre's grand rooftop ballroom on July 14, 1946, when my grandma was just 21 and my grandpa was 23. Beyond the glamorous setting and charming vintage details, the thing that's most amazing to me is that the spark of young love captured on the screen could set so much in motion-three children, three grandchildren, decades of happy memories. My grandparents were married for 61 years and I've admired their relationship and their loving nature for my entire life.

We love Lila's cascading bridal bouquet, and Morton's top hat just adds to the timeless charm of this wedding.

Says Shira, "Thankfully, their friend Arnie documented the day on a 8mm film camera. Years, later, their son (my father) had the footage digitized, and sometimes I just watch it again and again. The telegrams received, the toasts made with champagne coupes, my grandpa in his top hat, the multi-tiered wedding cake and, of course, the dancing-I imagine to the Big Band music of that age. I almost feel like I was there, with these scenes engrained in my mind, like beloved scenes from a favorite movie.

So, when the couples I work with at Martha Stewart Weddings ask whether or not they should hire a videographer, I always encourage it. Seeing an event with motion and sound (any lip-readers out there?) adds another narrative layer that will spark memories of that day years from now. And who knows-down the line you just may have a granddaughter who will love looking back at your wedding as much as you do." Thank you Shira for sharing your grandparents' story with us!
