via

When it comes to planning your honeymoon, so many couples are too busy with the wedding to book a trip that's truly one of a kind.

There's also the fact that straight after your wedding, you're likely going to be so tired, all you'll be fit for is flaking out on a beach (and we've got some awesome ideas for doing just that).

But if you and your beau are the kind of couple who loves an adventure, or you want to use your honeymoon fund to invest in a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, we've got some ideas for some honeymoons of the truly epic variety.

More and more couples are taking a 'mini moon' somewhere nearby for a few days after their wedding, and take time to really think about and plan a bigger trip (and recoup finances and holiday days), for a few months later, or even for their first anniversary.

If that sounds like you, or if you think you can handle even more excitement straight after your wedding, we've put together a list of truly exciting honeymoon ideas (we want to go on them all!).

So, from great roadtrips and railway journeys, to wonders of the world both natural and man-made, these are not just your average holidays. These are trips of a lifetime that will see you scratching one massive tick off your bucket-list.

1. Amalfi Coast

As someone from Europe, the Amalfi Coast might not seem like a very bucket-list worthy destination on first look, but this region in the South of Italy has inspired artists, poets and film-makers with its charm and beauty.

Stay in a luxury hotel perched on a cliff, charter a private boat to take you out for sunset, and feast on divine Italian food under the stars, with the twinkling of lights of towns like Salerno, Positano or Sorrento as your backdrop.

A safe, 'less adventurous' trip perhaps, but bucket-lists don't have to be all about parachute jumps and seven wonders. This is the place to indulge in once in a lifetime levels of romance, relaxation and luxury, before all the realities of kids, mortgages and marriage kick in.

2. Route 66

Route 66 is obviously a tried and tested journey, the Mother Road that runs from Santa Monica to Chicago.

Nowadays, there are lots of variations of the route, but despite its fame, it's still seen as the quintessential American road trip, and a way to get a good 'ol slice of U-S-A in a single journey, while taking in deserts, diners, and everything in between on your way.

Definitely one for a laid back couple who want a fun adventure they can take at their own pace.

3. Patagonia

Patagonia is one of those otherworldly places, that once you start reading about it, you get obsessed.

With pristine waters, barren landscapes, pointed peaks and epic glaciers, this barely-disturbed region of Argentina and Chile can offer honeymooners solitude, stillness and lots of adventures.

If you're nature-lovers who want your breath truly taken away by your honeymoon, Patagonia is the place to go.

4. Historic Middle East

Friends of mine recently honeymooned in Jordan (they stayed in Ma'in Hot Springs, it looked incredible) and it really opened up my eyes to what the Middle East can offer couples in search of atmosphere and history.

Of course some of the region is volatile, sadly we can't recommend you honeymoon in Syria or Iraq at the moment, but once you look past the news coverage and realise how isolated those headline-grabbing areas are, you'll find a beautiful part of the world with a lot to do, see (and eat!).

Old City Jerusalem, Petra in Jordan, the Dead Sea, Galilee wineries, and the endless mosques, souks, and deserts of Turkey, UAE or Oman - there's so much more to a holiday in the Middle East than luxury shopping and skyscrapers.

5. European Capitals

I did this trip when I was 18, so it was all backpacker hostels and cheap beer, but even on a strict budget it was the trip of a lifetime, so I can only imagine how magical it would be journeying around Europe with your new spouse.

Reasonably-priced Interrail passes mean that once you get yourself to Europe, the whole continent is just a train journey away, and a honeymoon taking in the highlights of its capital cities would be a pretty special one, don't you think?

Of course Rome and Paris are up there with honeymoon must-sees, but look to cool capitals like Berlin and Amsterdam, historical heavyweights like Budapest and Prague, and smaller cities like Ljubljana and Sarajevo for some serious charm.

6. Serengeti

A safari honeymoon is a no-brainer for some serious bucket-list ticking.

We've written before about the best places in the world for a safari, but if you're looking for a single region that's guaranteed to deliver the quintessential safari experience, the Serengeti is the only place.

Whether you stay in a sustainable campsite or a luxurious lodge, experienced guides, diverse landscapes, and of course, the vast selection of wildlife in this national park in Tanzania, will offer you a post-wedding holiday you'll never forget.

7. Bhutan & Nepal

Another of those places that gets all the more alluring the more you read about it, Nepal and Bhutan are neighbouring(ish) countries, partially nettled in the southern peaks of the Himalayas.

Both are pretty epic on their own, each with a unique feel and culture, but travellers often pair them together for an even more diverse trip.

Think trekking to Everest basecamp, taking in a Hindu festival in Kathmandu, or visiting a cliff-face Buddhist monastery in Bhutan. These countries are atmospheric, spiritual and beautiful, and if they're not already on your bucket-list, we reckon they should be!

8. The Orient Express

The Orient Express is one of the most iconic train journeys in the world. And while the route, and the companies who operate it have changed over the years, the classic route and the air of luxury and romance that surrounds it, remain.

The classic five day trip will see you board the train in Paris, and travel over the Alps, through Budapest, Bucharest and on to your final destination, Istanbul.

On board, you'll lap up the beautiful surroundings inside, and stunning scenery outside, all the while sipping cocktails and Champagne and dining on fine cuisine. How fabulous!

9. Machu Picchu

The Inca Trail is another iconic journey, and while it might not be an immediate choice for a honeymoon, if you want to tick something off your must-see list, Machu Picchu has got to be up there.

This Peruvian pilgrimage can be taken a number of ways; as a day trip from Cusco by train and bus, with minimal exertion or as a trek through the mountains over several days with a guide, which is pretty memorable and makes the most of the journey (and is probably a bonding experience for any couple!)

However you take it in, visiting this ancient Inca city, 8000ft above sea-level, is a pretty astonishing experience, and will surely set the tone for an adventurous marriage, don't you think?

10. Galápagos Islands

There are mixed thoughts about tourists going to the Galapagos Islands, but as somewhere that's advised to be visited just once by each person to goes there, it really is a once in a lifetime experience.

This collection of islands off the coast of Ecuador is perhaps the most unique, well-preserved and bio-diverse eco-system on the planet.

This is not your average tropical island honeymoon, tourists should only go to the Galápagos Islands if they have a true appreciation for nature and are mindful of conservation.

But if the idea of spotting rare birds, ancient giant tortoises, and incredible marine life gets you excited, then walking in the footsteps of Darwin will be an exceptional honeymoon indeed.
