Little did Kasey Simmons know that his small act of kindness would be repaid in a very big way. The 32-year-old Dallas-area resident was at a Kroger grocery store last week when he saw a woman looking upset. Simmons tried to cheer her up with words of encouragement and insisted on paying her $17 grocery bill.

"It's not about the money ― it's about showing someone you care," Simmons told WFAA.

Simmons didn't think much more about it when he went to work his shift at a local Applebee's restaurant the next day. But then a customer left him a very, very large tip on a $0.37 bill ― $500 to be exact ― with a note explaining why he deserved it.

Turns out, the diner was the daughter of the woman Simmons had consoled the day before.

"On one of the most depressing days of the year ... you made my mother's day wonderful," a note scribbled on a napkin by the woman read. "You insisted on paying. Told her she is a very beautiful woman. I have not seen this woman smile this much since dad died ... You made her year."

The day Simmons happened to bump into the woman at the grocery store was the three-year anniversary of her husband's death, and clearly his kindness made the difficult day a little more bearable.

"When people smile, I feel better. It lightens my world," he said.

The widow remains anonymous, but the note did read that it was a thanks on behalf of the Sullivan family. We reached out to Simmons for comment but had not heard back at the time of publication.

Simmons' act of kindness reminds us of the viral video of a college student serenading a widow at a retirement community earlier this year, to help her reminisce about the days when her husband used to play the piano for her.

Kindness really is all around.
