Hair Trends Straight Off the Music Festival Runway

Here at Makeup.com, we are lucky enough to have a panel of experts to sound off on the latest and greatest beauty topics. Today, for example, we asked hair guru Zachary Morad to give us the scoop on the hot hair trends we'll be seeing (and rocking) for festival season.

Festival season is one of my favorite times of year to scope out fresh new hairstyles and trends. Over the years the looks have evolved from beach waves and feathers to so much more. Festival goers are taking risks with their hair, and I'm loving it.

This year I kicked off my hair trend hunt by weaving in and out of the crowds at last month's Coachella festival - the modern flower children did not disappoint! Continue reading below to check out the desert-glam hairstyles that are setting the tone for this year's festival circuit!

Mini Buns

Sorry top knot! Who wants one bun when you can have two or three? One of the biggest trends I saw at last month's event was mini buns. These multi-knotted styles come in various forms: Double baby buns (think Spice Girls), three down the middle for a punk-rock twist, and even double half buns. This is a great way to take your top knot game to the next level.

Boxer Braids and Cornrows

The milkmaid braids of festivals past have taken a backseat to the double boxer braids we've seen on so many of our favorite celebs recently. The beauty of this look is its simplicity and ease. Simply part your hair down the middle and braid each side into a tight Dutch braid, securing each one at the end with an elastic hair band. For thicker, fuller plaits, tug at the braids after you've created them and spritz them with some hairspray (try L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Fine Control Hairspray) to hold the style.

Classic cornrows have also burst back onto the scene, in tune with the recent '90's style revival. Similar to boxer braids, this look simply requires parting your hair into three or four sections and Dutch braiding them completely. Want to add a little something extra to this chic and athletic style? Try using a tail comb to make zig-zag parts instead of straight ones!

Glitter

Time to shimmer, sparkle and shine in that sunlight! While the obvious move would be to work some of that dazzle into your makeup, I'm talking about letting your hair shine. Glittered parts made a quiet debut on spring Fashion Week runways, but now we're seeing them in full force on the music festival scene. Glitter-infused gel and hairsprays were used to create chunky, sparkling rainbow highlights, giving braids and loose waves a whimsical feel. This is a look that everyone can try on for size with minimal effort. Try giving your hair a soft sparkle next time you hit the town and see if all that glitters is actually gold!

Heavy Metal

There's never a lack of accessorizing at music festivals and this year is no different. However, this time around, our favorite hair accessories are getting dipped in metal. Everything from silver flower crowns and copper bobby pins will be topping the heads of festival goers this year. Take a stab at this trend by starting small: Accessorize your ponytail or mini buns with metallic pony cuffs! This addition is small, but it'll definitely add a certain something to your look.

Wigs

One of the best ways to get the festival hair you've always dreamed of is to buy it! I'm talking about wigs, ladies. Blue wigs, blonde wigs and every color in between. Want to rock short hair today? Wig it! Pink hair tomorrow? Wig it! This is a great way to get a commitment-free new look with limitless possibilities!
