Jeffrey Kalinsky's Picks for Eating and Drinking at New York Fashion Week

Jeffrey Kalinsky's Picks for Eating and Drinking at New York Fashion Week

via

When you're Jeffrey Kalinsky-the founder of a wildly influential two-store, 25-year-old enterprise as well as Nordstrom's fashion director-Fashion Week is, on the one hand, just another week, and on the other: seven full days in which anything can happen and probably will.

We stopped by on the first morning of New York Fashion Week Spring 2016 to catch up, and to get the download on what he thinks is going to be exciting this week.

Here's what Jeffrey has to say about the biggest party this season (a snap of his digital invite is above), the shows he's predicting will characterize the city's Spring 2016, and what's up with the CFDA candidates presenting in the next few days.

Oh, and where to eat and drink while you're in the neighborhood.

"The party of the week is happening tonight at the Tunnel, but the best part of it is the dress code," Kalinsky tells me. It's a party given by Marc Jacobs, but it isn't about his collection-he doesn't show until the end of the week. The party fetes the release of '70s photographer Chris Von Wangenheim's book, but the best part (the part everyone is talking about) is the dress code. Here it is, straight from Jeffrey's invite.

STRICT DRESS TO KILL CODE WILL BE ENFORCED: FUR COATS OVER LINGERIE, LIP GLOSS, JERRY HALL SIDE-SWEPT HAIR, SEQUINS, GOLD LAMÉ TURBANS, PATTI HEARST SYMBIONESE LIBERATION ARMY GEAR, ROGUE, ROLLERINA CHIC, SHEER HAREM PANTS, MINI SKIRTS AND MUSCULAR LEGS, PLATINUM RECORDS AS HEAD GEAR, SEQUINS, GRACE JONES BUTCH REALNESS, GLOSS-Y SKIN, BLEACHED EYEBROWS, SLITS, RIDING IN ON A WHITE HORSE, SEQUINS, SKY HIGH STILETTOS, MIRRORED AVIATORS, METAL MESH, COWL NECKLINE HALTERS, OR EYES OF LAURA MARS CHIC. NO FLAT SHOES. NO MATTE SURFACES. NO NATURAL LOOKS.

Got that?

As for which shows Jeffrey is expecting to really be wowed by, the answer is a quick, straightforward "Proezna Schouler and Marc Jacobs."

"They're the two most exciting shows in New York," he tells me. "What has always excited me is when you go in and feel completely stimulated. I don't go in expecting to see x, y or z. I want to see something new and I know Jack and Lazaro, and Marc will deliver."

And while he may not be as able to accurately predict what this year's crop of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund candidates are going to deliver, it's a solid bet that they'll have something exciting on view as well.

Nordstrom's fashion director sits on the board of CFDA judges along with Anna Wintour, Diane von Furstenberg and other insanely boldface names, and he had an equal vote in selecting the ten designers who are currently in the running. Jeffrey points to Cadet, Thadius O'Neil, Brother Vellies and Gypsy Sport as a few to train your eye on before the committee makes its deciding vote in November.

So stay tuned as we do just that.

Finally, whether you're in New York now or later, for the shows or any other reason at all, it's always good to have an insider's take on where to eat and drink-particularly when the insider at hand has impeccable style and a certain non-fussy, low-key nonchalance.
