While it's nice to have someone do your makeup for you, there are many reasons why doing your own wedding makeup can be beneficial. First of all, you've been doing your own face for how many years? No one knows every bone, freckle or blemish on your face better than you do. Whether you are anal about someone else doing your makeup (and there's nothing wrong with that) or you are on a budget, I'm here to share some makeup tips so you can walk down the aisle looking just as beautiful as if you got it done by the pros.

Flawless Face

Great news! A flawless face doesn't have to be reserved for those with perfect skin. With full coverage foundations, concealer and contouring tricks, you too can fake it 'til you make it!

1. Choose a Full Coverage Foundation that works for you. I've been a wedding makeup artist for close to 10 years now and depending on my client's skin type, I'll use different foundations. One of my favorites however is Makeup Forever HD. It has buildable medium to full coverage with a natural finish (not too matte, not too dewy).

Tip: Don't forget to use a primer to ensure the foundation lasts all day and blend it out with a Beauty Blender!

2. Use concealer to cover blemishes, dark circles and highlight. This is a critical step to achieving a flawless face. To cover blemishes and redness, use a concealer that matches your skin tone, not lighter or darker. To conceal the dark circles under your eye, use a concealer with a peach undertone (Bobbi Brown makes a great one). And to highlight, you can use a slightly lighter concealer. Don't go too light, or you'll end up looking like a deer in headlights.

Tip: Don't forget to blend! Finish off with a yellow-based or translucent powder to keep your makeup in place.

3. Don't be afraid of makeup. What a lot of brides fear is looking unnatural on their wedding day. However, you need to amp up your makeup on the day of your wedding if you want it to show up in photos, especially if you'll be outdoors in natural light. Don't be scared to play it up a bit and add some false lashes to define your features a bit more than usual... just don't overdo it where people won't recognize you!

Tip: Don't forget to use an eye shadow primer to ensure that it lasts all day.

4. DO tightline your eyes to connect the dots. There's nothing worse than a smokey eye being incomplete with sparse lashes. Tightline your eyes to give the "fuller lashes effect" and finish off with false lashes.

5. The eyebrows are the windows to your soul. While that may be a bit extreme, it's true that eyebrows can make or break the face! Eyebrows frame your face and complete your look so don't be shy to go bold! Just make sure you blend them out for a natural look.

Here are some additional makeup tips you may want to keep in mind:

  • Hydrate your skin by drinking lots of water. There's no better canvas for foundation than hydrated skin.
  • Prime, prime, prime. I can't emphasize the importance of priming your face and eyes enough. If you want it to last all day and night, don't forget this critical step.
  • Curl your eyelashes before applying falsies. This will help them to look more blended and natural. Top off with mascara to really bind them together.
  • Set your makeup with a translucent powder (especially in the T-zone) to minimize shine.
  • Finish with a setting spray! This will set your makeup into your skin and give you a nice little dew.
