6 Pro Tips for Prepping Your Face for Pictures

Makeup that makes us look amazing in real life doesn't always have the same effect in photos. Professional makeup artists know that what makes us look great in photos is color contrast, because it makes features pop.

Here are some tips for making the most of those photo-worthy moments:

1. Define the Eyes

Don't be afraid to go a little bold with your eye shadow. Trust us, a sultry contoured eye will translate perfectly on camera! Add subtle contrast to eyes with a neutral palette like Urban Decay Naked.

2. Avoid Reflective Foundation

While highlighting key areas of the face is a good idea (see below), any iridescent qualities will be magnified with the flash of a camera. Use a makeup with a matte finish, like Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk UV Foundation SPF 20, to make your skin look flawless and grease-free.

3. Contour the Cheeks and Jaw

Accentuating your bone structure helps you avoid appearing washed out in photos, not to mention staves off those 10 pounds the camera is notorious for piling on. You can do this with a contouring kit, like NYX Cosmetics Highlight and Contour Powder or Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette.

4. Highlight the Tops of Cheeks

Remember what we said about iridescence? One place you can break this rule is on any areas of the face you want to make more prominent, like the tops of cheekbones. Use a highlighting product like Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer to make them stand out against the shadow effect created by contouring.

5. Use Lip Liner and Gloss

Again, contrast is key in photos. By using a slightly darker shade on the edges of lips with a lip liner, like L'Oréal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lipliner, and a lighter, reflective gloss in the center of lips, like L'Oréal Colour Riche Gloss, your pout will appear more full. While we love a vibrant, matte lipstick, when prepping for your photo op, it might not always be the most effective look.

6. Use the Turtle Technique

Stay with us here. A strategic pose and angle is crucial for bringing out your best features. When in doubt, make like a turtle by jutting out your neck and lowering your chin. You'll create more of a shadow under your jawline, which - you guessed it - will add a slimming contrast between your neck and jawline.
