Fun Camping Country Outdoor Wedding with Homegrown Flowers

Fun Camping Country Outdoor Wedding with Homegrown Flowers

There is nothing better than a free spirited happy wedding day, which is exactly what we have on WWW today.

WWW readers Tammy and Martin planned their outdoor nuptials for the 26 th July 2014 at Godwick Great Barn and Hall in Norfolk. They envisioned a fun and informal day which included camping, space hoppers and live music.

They were blessed with the most gorgeous sunshine which made for lovely portraits, gardener Martin grew the majority of the fun florals and there was an epic naked sponge cake.

Thanks goes to the wonderful Freckle Photography for providing the imagery.

THE PROPOSAL | Martin proposed in the last hour of my 20's, meaning that I felt doubly adult but much more excited when I woke up the next morning! We had been staying on the north Norfolk coast and had spent the evening having a good laugh at the ridiculously pretentious food we were served, including a 'deconstructed banoffee pie' which turned out to be some biscuit, next to some banana, next to some toffee.

THE VISION | Our main aim was to keep things fun and informal, the idea of a starchy wedding seemed a bit ridiculous to both of us. We also wanted the freedom to create the kind of day we wanted without lots of restrictions and without feeling like 'wedding tax' had been added to everything. Our initial ideas of a party with some vows became a lot more structured when we started to think about the logistics of organising 150 people, although the day still felt super-relaxed. It was important that the wedding seemed like ours, and wasn't too generic. We are also lucky enough to have lots of conveniently talented friends and family, who couldn't really refuse when we asked them to do everything from designing the invitations to making the wedding cake!

THE PLANNING PROCESS | People have asked me if I miss having a wedding to plan - I have laughed in their faces! We have a ten tab spreadsheet left to tell the tale. My overriding memory of the planning process is a 15 month long slog towards the finish line, although there were of course some fun bits like viewing the venues and trying on enormous princess dresses just because I could! I can remember thinking 'People that enjoy this must have some kind of problem', although now I realise that the process of planning a wedding is something that's important to go through, if you can be bothered to do this then you definitely want to spend your lives together!

BUDGET | More than we would have liked, but not as bad as it could have been.

THE VENUE | Godwick was the perfect place for the kind of wedding we had in mind; a stunning barn and countryside location, with the freedom to do things our own way. The owner and event managers encouraged us to be creative, and we felt like they actually wanted to help us rather than bleed us dry! We loved the fact that our guests could camp right next to the barn, after staying up sitting round the firepits (and building a giant haybale igloo), and the tractor and sheep helped sway us as well.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | The dress was by Jason Jennings, shoes from Irregular Choice, freshwater pearl jewellery from all over the place.

FINDING THE DRESS | Finding the dress was actually one of the easiest and most unexpected parts of the whole wedding process. My friends were visiting about a month after we got engaged, and demanded that we go dress shopping (mainly for the free bubbles & to see me in silly Jordan dresses). In the second shop we went into my dress was hanging up next to the door, I instantly loved it, the girls told me to buy it then and there, and then I found out it was half price. Job done!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | I can safely say that it took Martin at least 50x longer to find exactly the right size and shade of blue gingham check than it did to find my wedding dress. His suit was from French Connection.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | The readings were as difficult to find as the dress was easy; we wanted to find something personal to us, without being too nauseating. After many hours of scouring the internet, our bookshelves and music collections we went for:

The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard (Martin's adaptation)

Notes on marriage by Charles Darwin

Vow by Clare Shaw

We wrote our vows ourselves and included important things such as remembering to make each other cups of tea and having adventures together.

Our friend Megan played me down the aisle with 'All I want is you' by Barry Louis Polisar.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | The lovely Kelly and Becky wore bargain Warehouse dresses bought in the boxing day sale, and Martins niece Cushla's dress was from BHS.

THE FLOWERS | Martin is a gardener at a National Trust property, he grew the majority of the flowers on his own wedding plot, then pinched the rest from around the garden! This added an element of excitement as we had no idea what we would end up with. The flowers were arranged by his incredible sister Rachel.

THE CAKE | The naked cake was made by our good friend Hannah Doncaster, manager of Macarons & More, Norwich. My grandfather provided one of his enormous selection of swords to cut it with... it was a tough choice between the five foot broadsword or a samurai!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The incredibly talented Emma Latham of Freckle Photography, a very good friend of mine who as well as doing utterly amazing things with light also managed to make Martin look like he was enjoying the couples portraits!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We had some personal touches like a photo display of family weddings through the ages, we made up cards for our guests to fill in instead of a book, and our favours were party bags with love hearts, bubbles and fake moustaches. I made bunting out of some crocheted doilies I bought from ebay. The beautiful barn didn't need much decoration apart from fairy lights, and we didn't have a colour scheme.

THE HONEYMOON | A chilled week in the Peak District recovering from the wedding, and planning honeymoon #2 in Sri Lanka!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Receiving a signed David Attenborough book from Martin on the morning of the wedding.

The speeches - all were excellent, funny and heartfelt, with a best man's powerpoint presentation of some of Martins greatest wardrobe malfunctions.

Watching poor Emma desperately trying to keep up with the tractor and running through piles of sheep poo, with massive cameras swinging all over the place, trying to get the perfect shot! What a professional...

Martin and I didn't have a first dance, but we did have a massive dance-off to Super Freak by Rick James.

One of our wedding guests seeing the family resemblance and asking Martins brother if he was his dad!

My 80 year old grandmother dancing until 1am, and then making it to the pub for lunchtime the next day.

Indoor and outdoor sets from the excellent He Hews, and mates pitching in to DJ later on.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Don't worry too much about making everything look 100% perfect, nobody will notice! Make sure there is enough food and booze, and you can't go too far wrong.
