How to Make Black and Blue Lipstick Wearable (Really!)

If ever was a time to get a little shocking with your beauty style, it's the fall and winter season. As the color palettes get more earthy, it's important to break up the neutrality with something bold and head-turning. Nothing fulfills this need quite like lipstick. This season, two super deep (and unusual) lipstick shades - black and blue - have emerged on runways and red carpets and, soon enough, on you! Although you might think these two colors should only make their way on to your face in the form of a bruise, we are here to broaden your lipstick horizons. We enlisted the help of makeup guru Alana Dawn to show us how to rock these two dark shades with effortless flair!

Black Lipstick

  1. Line your lips with a black eyeliner pencil. Dawn used L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Eyeliner.
  2. Using a lip brush, apply black lipstick to the lips, making sure the color is evenly distributed on the entire lip, including corners. Dawn used Makeup Forever Rouge Artist Intense in Satin Black.
  3. Grab a cream-based highlighter (like Loréal Paris Magic Lumi Highlighter) and apply to the area framing the lips. This helps accentuate the lip shape and prevent bleeding.

Blue Lipstick
  1. Apply concealer to the lips to create a clean slate and allow the blue lip color to truly pop.
  2. Apply a navy blue lipstick lips with a lip brush. We love NYX Cosmetics Wicked Lippies in Sinful.
  3. Take a charcoal gray eye shadow and brush it on the lips to deepen the blue color. Try Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow in Audacious Asphalt.
