3 Ways You Need to Start Wearing Colored Eyeliner Now

We may not be much with a paintbrush, but hand us an eyeliner brush and the creative juices just start flowing. While we still love gradient winged eyeliner and always swoon over a colorful cat eye, we decided our artistic eyeliner repertoire could always use a refresh. So we called in professional makeup artist Tara Shakespeare and had her bring to life a few new ways to wear colored eyeliner.

Bright Pop in Waterline

Adding color to the waterline is a quick and easy way to enhance your look. Black and dark colors bring the intensity, but a pop of pigment is an unexpected way to add interest. The Lime Crime Eyeliner in Blue Milk that Shakespeare used here is light enough that it opens up the eyes and bright enough to make the eyes stand out. Whatever color you choose, just remember to line underneath the waterline with black eyeliner (Shakespeare used Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion ) to get the contrast and definition.

Dual Winged Eyeliner

In all of our many cat eye applications we've come to the conclusion that two wings are better one. Doubling up your cat eye doesn't have to be as extreme as it may sound. Dual winged eyeliner can be as subtle as you want to make it. Shakespeare took the understated route when she applied Lancôme Artliner 24H Precision Eyeliner in Turquoise to create these slim, clean lines. The key is to make sure the upper and lower wings are parallel. Shakespeare drew the top wing first and then mirrored the shape and angle of that wing on the lower lash line.

Exaggerated Graphic Eyeliner

There's no end to what you can do with an eye pencil. For the eyeliner enthusiast who loves to experiment, try this playful look. Shakespeare first lined the upper lash line with L'Oréal Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner in Black . Next she added blue liner to the lower lash line and waterline using L'Oréal Colour Riche Eyeliner in Cobalt . Then she extended the cobalt liner up to meet the black, creating the outer wing. For the final kick of color, Shakespeare took the blue to the inner corners.
