This beautiful event is filled with opulent details (just wait until you see Elizabeth's ah-mazing wedding dress and veil) and traditional touches. Held in Winston-Salem, their wedding has nods to their families' history, but also plenty of modern fun (the band looks like they had the crowd dancing until the wee hours). Make sure to check out their wedding video, as well as Calen's thoughts on the joys of wedding planning and DIY projects!

Our vision for the day was over the top elegance meets whimsy. Our theme was "love birds" so we used lots of iron cages and put fluffy flowers and lights in them. Our reception was in a historic hotel that was the mansion for the Gray family. With such a historic and beautiful venue it was easy to get the elegance we wanted. We have a good relationship with the company that did our flowers so we told them a general idea of colors and gave them our cages and let them do their creative process. In my opinion, you always get the best work when you let the florist have fun.

Our largest DIY project was the ribbon wands for the exit. We went to Home Depot and bought wooden dowels and had them cut into 300 18″ wands. We also bought lots of gold and glitter spray paint. We went to a craft store to buy large sheets of Styrofoam. We also found ribbon and bells. From there the real work began. We stuck all the wands in the Styrofoam to stand up so we could spray paint them. After they dried we added ribbon and a bell to each wand. This was very time consuming, but with the help of a few bridesmaids we were able to get it done.

There were many details that have special meaning to us. At the rehearsal, Elizabeth surprised her mom by wearing her mother's wedding dress to practice walking down the aisle. The day of, Elizabeth added a rosary that had been placed in both my mother's and her mother's bouquet the day of their weddings. Elizabeth's father was no longer around to walk her down the aisle so her brother stepped in to help fill his shoes. She had her father's initials from one of his blue dress shirts stitched to her dress to add her something blue.

The church we got married in is the same location her sister was married. It is also extremely important to us because this is where Elizabeth's father is buried. The land the church was built on was donated by the Gray family. The location we chose for everything has a long history in Winston-Salem.

The events surrounding the wedding were exactly what we had dreamed of. The engagement party was incredible and held at a historic Winston location. The band for that event was amazing. From what I hear, the bridal shower was amazing and the cake was done by the same lady who would be doing our wedding cake. The bridesmaid luncheon and painting party helped all of the bridesmaids laugh and catch up since they all knew each other. The rehearsal dinner was ocean-themed since I love the beach. It was executed flawlessly. The out-of-town lunch on the day of the wedding gave the people who traveled so far a chance to meet people and enjoy some famous North Carolina BBQ.
