A Hairstylist’s Forecast for the 3 Hottest Hair Trends of 2014

A new year is upon us which leads many down the path of reinvention. Goodbye 2013 and hello opportunity! A fresh start! A new you! It gives us options and the ability to try new things because it’s the beginning of a new cycle, and possibly a new chapter. One of the most enjoyable parts of this turnover is to play with your look a little. Whether you get a new cut or completely switch up your color, changing your hair is an amazing way to prime yourself to be the new you—the best you.

The Style

In recent years, the women of fashion and film have allowed their long locks to swing freely and naturally down their backs. In 2014, we will be sweeping that hair up into beautiful updos filled with extreme textures and embellished with the ornate accessories we have seen grace the Spring shows of designers such as Zac Posen and Dolce and Gabanna. The updo will reign supreme. From casual to couture it will be favored for its easy day to night transition and its no fuss practicality.

MDC Tip: For an easy, every day updo, try this 3-step messy bun.

The Cut

If 2013 has taught us anything about hair it’s that it is okay to cut it off! We watched celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway and Ciara ditch they’re length and opt for shorter, cropped cuts–and the fashion industry followed suit. Even Sasha Fierce shocked us when she posted a selfie donning a boyish pixie. Just a glimpse of things to come in 2014, we’ll continue to see the tresses of our favorite celebrities on the cutting room floor as we have already begun to see on the runway. The need for change has proven triumphant and as always, it starts at the top.

The Color

What’s happening in color for 2014 is serious business; it’s all about true tones and overly saturated color. If it’s Copper, it’s a gleaming penny. If it’s Blonde, it’s buttermilk. And if it’s Dark, it’s crude oil and nothing in between. The dark golden blondes of yesterday are being replaced by beige and chocolate. As the ombré grows out it’s transitioning into a more subtle look–leaving only small flecks of light as complement to the strong color they accent.

Nothing is fresher than making a look your own; play around with a few of these ideas and enjoy the ride. I wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Inspiring New Year.
