Moody, rich, saturated—we can’t get enough of the Goth resurgence that’s slyly slipping into the beauty scene. With its sultry, unapologetic vibe and nods to the decade of flannel shirts and teen spirit, the new Goth is a stylish and more feminine version of its predecessor. To help us master this fall trend, we caught up with professional makeup artist Elyse Reneau for her step-by-step guide to going Goth.

How To: Goth Glam

1. Apply foundation and concealer as normal. Psssst—need a recommendation for the best foundation for your skin type? Here you go!

2. Dust bronzer under your cheekbones, to complement your mocha colored smoky eye. Two of our current favorites are Yves Saint Laurent Terre Saharienne and Tarte Mineral Powder Bronzer.

3. Highlight above your cheekbones and down the t-zone for an added glow.

4. To give structure to your face, fill in your brows. Reneau used Anastasia Brow Wiz in Brunette.

5. Since the eyes are the main attraction with this look, take special care with your shadow. Before applying your eyeshadow prep your lids with a primer for longer lasting, more saturated color. Reneau used MAC Paint Pot in Painterly.

6. To nail your smoky eye, opt for a warm bronze shadow over the entirety of your lid, and add depth in the crease by blending out a rich chocolate shadow at the corners of your eye and the lower lash line. We like Maybelline Expertwear Eyeshadow in Chai Latte and Shu Uemura Sweet Beige Brown Palette.

7. Next, line your top and bottom lids with black liner. There’s no need for perfection with this look, so if you mess up your liner just blend away with your shadow.

8. Finish your eyes with two coats of your favorite black mascara. Around here, we’re currently wearing L’Oréal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara and Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Mascara.

9. For a subtle complement to your gothic smoky eye, opt for a nude, or light pink lip. Reneau used Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Lipcolor in Pale Lip above.

10. To finish the look, pull your hair into a feminine low slung, slightly off-center ponytail.
