Greens & Blues: How to Wear Bright Summer Colors

Greens & Blues: How to Wear Bright Summer Colors

If there’s ever a time to experiment with colorful, bold makeup shades, it’s summer. From juicy watermelon, to melting popsicles to psychedelic beach towels, everything about the season inspires us to gravitate towards color. While we’re always game for a pinch of pink, there are two other hues that also have our hearts aflutter right now: blue and green. We’re crushing on all varieties of the shades, so to help us master the trend we enlisted the help of two of our favorite professional makeup artists, Lily Marsh and MDC’s own Elyse Reneau. Below, they give us the rundown on how every skin tone can wear the look.

Dark Skin

Bold colors show beautifully on darker skin, so both green and blue will look great with your coloring. Try applying a bold shadow on your upper lid only, with the most intense pigmentation right around the lash lie. When sporting colorful eye makeup, remember to keep the rest of your look clean and neutral so you avoid looking overly done.

Eyes: Marsh used Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Metal in Electric Blue with L’Oréal Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Infinite Sky blended on top, plus a swipe of L’Oréal Voluminous Power Volume 24H Mascara in Waterproof Black.

Brows: Marsh filled in model Christi’s brows with an angled brush and MAC Eye Shadow in Concrete.

Skin: To add a delicate pop of color to the cheeks, Marsh used Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Peach Satin.

Medium Skin

Both green and blue are flattering on medium skin tones, so have a little extra fun by playing with both simultaneously! Opt for a nude lip to complete the look subtly.

Eyes: First, Reneau brightened under model Mia’s brows with Giorgio Armani Master Corrector and applied L’Oréal De-Crease Eye Shadow Base to the lid. Next, she dusted Anastasia Beverly Hills Hypercolor Brow and Hair Powder in Green to the lower lid and created dimension in the crease of the lid with Maybelline ExpertWear Eyeshadow in Chai Latte. To top it off, Reneau lined the lower lash line with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Chaos.

Skin: For gorgeous skin to complement her color, Reneau applied Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation.

Fair Skin

With fair skin, too much color can look jarring and unflattering. Stick to a neutral eyeshadow base, with a dash of color at the lashline for just the right amount of pop.

Eyes: Marsh primed model Christina’s lids with Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-hr Smoothing Eye Primer, then applied Lancôme Color Design Eye Brightening All-In-One 5 Shadow & Liner Palette in Bronze Amour. For a pop of green, she used Tarte Skinny SmolderEYES Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner in Emerald. Finally, two coats of Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Shocking completed the look.

Skin: To complement Christina’s bold liner, Marsh used Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Coffee Cake for a delicate color on the cheeks.
